Wu Yunchu is a chemical engineer based in Shanghai. In 1922, he became interested in Ajinomoto because of its prevalence in China. Because MSG is not meat and can be eaten by vegetarian lovers, Wu Yunchu asked someone to design the packaging bottle into the shape of Guanyin and Luohan. In previous years, China's exhibits were mostly silk and tea, and at the 1926 Philadelphia World Expo, "Bergamot MSG" won the highest award for its first high-profile appearance as a modern industrial product in China. Bergamot MSG has participated in the World Expo three times, and all three times won this award.
In just a few years, the sales of bergamot monosodium glutamate have expanded from China to Southeast Asian countries, and the domestic market share has completely exceeded that of Ajinomoto monosodium glutamate. However, the glory of the Buddha's hand brand failed to continue, and in the first industry rectification, Tianchu Company stopped operating due to the problem of monosodium glutamate fermentation pollution, and the "Buddha's hand" trademark was transferred from Tianchu to Guanshengyuan. Although the brand has survived, it has long since lost its former glory.
