The world's second-most prestigious olive oil competition is none other than the NYIOOC New York International Olive Oil Competition. Hosted by the Olive Oil Times, it receives 1,000 olive oil samples each year and is the largest and most watched olive oil competition. In 2018, Franci Oil Mill had two olive oils win gold medals at the NYIOOC competition and one received a "best in class" premium rating, which is a grand slam.
Located in Tuscany, Italy, Val Orcia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 thanks to its hills, valleys and villages, dotted with wineries and olive oil estates, and in perfect harmony between natural landscapes and human activity. In 1958, Franci Oil Mill's founding brothers bought a century-old olive grove, acquired 15,000 mixed varieties of olive trees, and built an oil farm in a nearby hilltop town. Decades later, Franci Oil Mill has continued to make a name for himself, having been named Grower of the Year by Red Shrimp in 2017 and second in the World's Best Olive Oil Mill for 2017-2018.
Franci Oil Mill won the award because of the quality and quantity of the discarded varieties, many of which are not hardy to cold and, like Crudo, are also challenged by natural disasters. However, during the intense harvest period of 10 days and a month and a half before the cold hits, Franci Oil Mill still does not give up the manual harvesting to ensure that the quality of the finished oil is high and uniform. Its processing experience is ripe, from crushing to pressing, the working rate of the machine is adjusted according to the ripeness of the fruit to obtain the most lasting aroma. In 2005, Franci Oil Mill was appointed Teaching Center for the Department of Olive Oil at the University of Food Sciences.
In 1995, the second generation of oil farms began to seek a channel to sell their products internationally, but because the scale was difficult to compete with the large manufacturers, it fell into a difficult situation. In order to break through the dilemma, Franci Oil Mill combined the terroir of the Orcia Valley with the publicity, and although it did not obtain the PDO certificate of origin, it still gained a high volume. In 1996, the flagship olive oil Villa Magra was launched, and its strong fruity flavor combined with terroir propaganda quickly won nearly 10 awards.
Villa Magra, which bears the same name as Franci Oil Mill's olive grove, is a greenish-gold mixed-fruit EVOO with fruity fresh and open varieties such as moraiolo and leccino. Harvested between October 15 and 31 every year, it retains enough polyphenols, and the grassy, fruity, nutty and bitter and spicy notes are all bold, and until today they are winning medals and appearing on the gold medal list of the 2018 NYIOOC competition, with 500ml sold for 18 euros, or 140 yuan, which is the usual high price of Italian olive oil.
A long aftertaste is a common trait of Franci Oil Mill olive oils, especially the CRU line, which is extracted from the early harvest of single-fruit olives in mid-October, resulting in a bright green oil with a complex flavor profile. Villa Magra Grand Cru is extracted from Correggiolo single fruit with outstanding aroma characteristics, in addition to the aroma of grass and almonds, it can also smell a slight cherry aroma, and the bitter and spicy aroma is strong after the mouth, and the aroma is lingering, which is a good choice for adding fresh vegetables or removing red meat, and also won the gold medal of the 2018 NYIOOC competition. Moraiolo is equally bitter and intense, but the herbal finish of chicory and almond dominates. The price of both 500ml models is around 26 euros, which is 200 yuan.
Franci Oil Mill also has a standard line of products that are cold-pressed from mixed small fruits harvested between November 1 and December 20, which is not as good as the single-fruit EVOO of the Villa Magra and CRU lines harvested in 15 days, but not as flavorful. The Franci BIO Toscano IGP won the 2018 NYIOOC "Best in Class" premium rating for its balanced, soft, and slightly spicy taste, surpassing the Gold Award for its sweetness-based notes. At only 20 euros, or 150 yuan, 500ml is quite cost-effective among Franci Oil Mill's products, but it has no advantage over other brands.
Franci Oil Mill's olive oil is not cold and can be purchased directly in the United States and Europe, but the stock of each type often does not exceed 10 bottles, and it is even more difficult to buy it from China.
