Morinaga Confectionery is a well-known Japanese confectionery company, belonging to the same group as Morinaga Dairy, and has strong production strength in the food industry. Due to the similarity of the industrial structure with the Meiji Group, there are comprehensive snack foods and dairy products, and they are often compared to each other. In the chocolate category, Meiji is undoubtedly better at digging for cocoa, but Morinaga Seika is more distinctive in the development of ordinary confectionery.
Morinaga Seika's food business can be divided into various fields such as confectionery, beverages, frozen foods, and health foods, and the confectionery business mainly revolves around the HI-CHEW series, which is a well-known inflatable gummy candy in Japan, which has been on the market since 1975. Morinaga Seika uses a special process to control the sugar crystals of the candy within 30 microns, and during the production process, the crystal particles do not become coarse, giving the candy a soft and long-lasting fruit sweetness, and it is not sticky to the teeth like maltose. The sugar body wraps the real puree, fresh and sweet.
At present, Morinaga confectionery, led by HI-CHEW Hi Jiu Candy, has a 37% share of the Japanese gummy candy market, and it is also quite popular worldwide. In 2003, Morinaga Seika entered the Chinese market, and Hi Jiu Candy was the main series, but the production was limited, and the taste and quantity were not as sufficient as in Japan. Until 2012, when a factory was built in Zhejiang, large-scale mass production was truly realized, but the taste was still not as rich as that in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and special candies such as bottle-shaped marble soda candy and milk candy were not sold in mainland China.
In March 2018, the Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of Hong Kong announced that the sodium content of a brown sugar milk produced by Morinaga Fruit in Taiwan did not match the value declared on its nutrition label, but the batch was not available in Chinese mainland.
