Genoa is a premium brand of Chicken of the Sea, one of the top three canned tuna manufacturers in the United States, mainly for the North American market. The parent company, Thai Union, is the world's largest tuna company, and has a strong say in the pricing of purse seine tuna raw materials and the processing and sales of canned tuna. As a premium brand of Chicken of the Sea, Genoa is known for its canned yellowfin tuna loin segments.
Genoa's canned raw fish is sourced from the waters of the eight member states of the Nauru Agreement (PNA) and supplied by Dutch company Pacifical, using MSC-certified yellowfin tuna from the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. PNA is the most important purse seine fishing area for international tuna, and this area is considered to be a high production area with good quality yellowfin tuna.
Genoa's products are available in two types: yellowfin tuna and albacore, canned albacore tuna in olive oil, unsalted olive oil and natural brine, and canned yellowfin tuna in olive oil, extra virgin olive oil and olive oil. Genoa's yellowfin tuna is more popular, with a darker color, lighter flavor and a taste closer to skipjack tuna than albacore tuna, which generally contains less mercury than albacore. Genoa's canned yellowfin tuna is not a whole piece of flesh, nor does it have the pale white color of albacore tuna, but it is clean and firm in cubes, with good freshness and a very mild tuna flavor, which can be well concealed by olive oil and extra virgin olive oil. However, Genoa's yellowfin tuna is noticeably salty, especially in olive oil, which may be used in salads, sandwiches or other dishes to better neutralize its saltiness.
In the evaluation of canned tuna by Consumerlab, a well-known consumer laboratory in the United States, Genoa's extra virgin olive oil-soaked yellowfin tuna has become the first choice for products in the same category, with each can providing appropriate Omega 3 fatty acids, and has excellent taste and moderate price. The price of the basic type of yellowfin tuna soaked in olive oil is only 12.5 yuan per can, the price of extra virgin olive oil-soaked yellowfin tuna is about 15 yuan per can, and the price of yellowfin tuna soaked in natural brine in olive oil is about 17 yuan per can. Genoa's three canned albacore tuna prices are all around 17 yuan per can, which is a little bright spot in comparison, but the solid meat content and simple ingredient list still make it a good source of protein.
