The "Wheels" brand has always been synonymous with canned Mexican abalone – at least for more than a decade. Nowadays, the Mexican canned abalone is not only the "wheel brand", but the new Mexican canned abalone brand "Bao Zhongbao" is a typical rising star.
Mexico's canned abalone is a state-owned production, and the national canned abalone production area is under the umbrella of the state-owned manufacturer Ocean Garden, and is sold under the trademark of "Calmex" wheels. In 2007, Ocean Garden was sold to an American company, and a new operator began supplying canned Australian abalone with "Wheel Brand", a move that was seen as a blow to the quality of Mexican abalone and caused discontent in Mexican abalone producing regions. Since then, seven of Mexico's legal abalone fishing areas have declared their independence from Ocean Garden, including Buzos y Pescadores, a well-known producer, in partnership with Hong Kong-based South China Sea Farm Ltd, to start producing canned food called "California Mexico". As a result, the abalone in the cans is from the same source, and the wild Mexican abalone in the cans also comes from the waters of Baja California, and the difference in the quality of the abalone is minimal.
Buzos y Pescadores is a well-known fishing cooperative in Baja California, with non-harvesting areas in the appellation that rotate every 6 years to allow the waters to recuperate. The legal abalone season in Mexico is from January to July, with the rest of the season being closed. Buzos y Pescadores extends the fallow period to March to ensure the growth cycle of the abalone in the production area. Buzos y Pescadores is not a farm, but a young food distributor with a wide range of experience in seafood products, as well as the popular canned abalone brand "Jun Yan", which specializes in South African and Australian abalone. The effect of the marriage between the two families was immediate, and "Bao Zhongbao" was soon sold in the Chinese world in East Asia, Southeast Asia and North America, and in 2015, Bao Zhongbao won the Hong Kong Star Brand Award.
Bao Zhongbao has three products, which are identified as gold cans, red cans and black cans. Like the wheel abalone, Bao Zhongbao only uses abalone and brine into the can, and no other additives are used. The gold pot is a abalone, very rare, using wild adult fish over 15 years old, the abalone flavor is heavy, and it can be called the best abalone. The red cans are blue abalone (Haliotis fulgens), which grows on the seabed at depths of 3 to 7 meters, and is larger, with an average size of 20 centimeters in the can, and most of the size is half or two heads per can. The black can is yellow abalone (Haliotis corrugata), which grows in the sea at depths of 7 to 60 meters, with an average size of 15 centimeters and a slightly smaller body, so the size of each can is mostly two, two and a half, and three heads.
Wild yellow abalone grows in deeper waters, is more labor-intensive to harvest, and has a longer growth cycle, so the abalone flavor is stronger, and yellow abalone is generally considered to be more advanced than blue abalone. The quota of yellow abalone is tight and is rarely seen in the market, but Bao Zhongbao sells red cans and black cans at the same price, and the price of both is about 750 yuan; The price of the gold pot is relatively high, about 800 yuan. Compared with the same specifications of the wheel abalone, the price of Bao Zhongbao is slightly lower and has enough cost performance. Like the wheel abalone, the origin code of the abalone, the code of the depth of harvesting, the number of heads and other information will be marked in the sequence of the bottom of the tank, if you want to feast decently, it is recommended to choose an integer head of products, such as one, two, three, etc., that is, the code of the bottom of the can "10", "20", "30".
