Sharp Island
The eastern part of Sai Kung is rich in landforms, and the islands here are full of geological features that are worth experiencing, but due to their remote location, mainland tourists rarely visit here. Located only 2 km from Sai Kung Public Pier, Sharp Island is the most convenient and safe to visit.
Kiu Tsui Chau is uninhabited, and the Sai Kung Public Pier is served by private street ferries, with more stalls at the pier and charter services. Don't rush to Sai Kung, the first thing to do is check the weather conditions, boats are usually closed on rainy days, and it's best to visit when the weather is nice. In addition, the daily tide conditions of Henglan Island should also be checked on the homepage of the Hong Kong Observatory, and the most famous attractions on Kiu Tsui Chau will only be visible when the tide is not higher than 1.5 metres above the datum.
Saigon lacks rail transit and needs to transfer buses to reach Saigon Bus Terminal. Double-decker buses are more comfortable than minibuses, so we recommend taking the 92 bus, which starts at the Diamond Metro station and adds the 92R line on holidays. There are also 1A minibuses to choose from at Choi Hung MTR Station, so please be aware that the minibuses are fast and uncomfortable. When you arrive in Saigon, it is best to eat and buy dry food and drinking water.
There are two piers on the island, Xiamen Bay and Qiao Tsui Chau, it is recommended to land from Xiamen Sea, and Qiao Tsui Chau Beach is more suitable as the end point of the journey. Xiamen Bay is located at the southern tip of the island, and the beach is on the east side of the ferry, which is a 2-minute walk away. The length of Xiamen Bay Beach is about 120 meters, although the area is not large, the water quality is clear and visible, and the sand thickness is at a medium level, but there is a lot of gravel. Xiamen Bay is a great place to swim, but for those who just want to simply tread the water, you won't have to waste too much time here, and the beach at the end of the tour has better water quality and can be reached along hiking trails.
The entrance to the trail is less obvious and is located at 10 o'clock at the staircase behind the beach office. The total length of the trail is about 1.6 km, and even if you take photos and breaks along the way, you can reach the finish line in less than 1 hour. The first section of the road is made of concrete steps, located in the middle of the forest, and the back is a pristine dirt pavement, which is exposed to the sun, so it is best to take sun protection measures. The top of the Black Mountain is 97 meters above sea level, which is the highest point of the mountain trail, and although the pavilion is condescending, it is affected by the vegetation and has an unsatisfactory view.
There is no fork in the trail and the end point is Kiu Tsui Chau Beach. The water quality of the beach is excellent, and among all the beaches in Hong Kong with monitoring data, Kiu Tsui Chau has the best performance, with a turbidity of only 4.82 NTU during heavy rains and 0.6 NTU on sunny days. The beach is of inferior quality, with more gravel shells than Xiamen Bay, but the total length is more than 100 meters, which is clean enough.
There is also the most famous attraction at the beach, "Lianshazhou" (also known as Qiaotou Island), which means that Qiaozui Island and the small island opposite are connected by "Shaqiao". This scene only occurs at low tide levels, when a bridge of pebbles, gravel, and shells gradually emerges on the surface of the sea. Qiaotou and Shaqiao have been selected as global geoparks because of their rich geological characteristics of volcanic rocks, among which quartz monzonite has become a "red stone" because of its resemblance to a pineapple bun, and rhyolite has recorded traces of magma flow, which is also very interesting. You can go to Qiaotou Island along the sand bridge to visit the Geopark, but you can't stay for a long time, and if there are signs of rising water, you should return in time to avoid being trapped.
After visiting the Geopark, return to Sai Kung at Sharp Island Pier. Kon Tsui receives 250 visitors on weekdays and 750 on Saturdays and Sundays.
Tips:
1. Beach water quality is better when the weather is fine;
2. When Typhoon Signal No. 2 is hoisted by the Hong Kong Observatory, ships at the pier will not go to sea;
3. You can swim in Xiamen Bay Beach, but you can only enjoy Kiu Tsui Chau Beach;
4. There are no shops and toilets along the Qiaozui Island hiking route, so it is best to bring enough drinking water and dry food;
5. There are seafood restaurants near Saigon Pier that have been included in the list of trusted choices.
