Peet's Coffee, known as Peet's Coffee in China, was founded in 1966 by Dutch-born roaster Alfred Peet in Berkeley, California. Peet's Coffee has created a new chain model of selling freshly ground coffee and roasted coffee beans, leading the second wave of specialty coffee. The birth of Starbucks was also directly influenced by Peet's coffee, the three founders all studied under Alfred Peet, and Starbucks' coffee beans were also purchased from Peet's coffee at the earliest, and the shadow of Peet's coffee can still be seen in Starbucks' coffee today.
 
In 2001, Peet's Coffee was listed on the NASDAQ and was acquired by the German JAB Group in 2012. After the acquisition, Peet's Coffee continued to move, successively acquiring the third wave of specialty coffee pioneers Intelligentsia and Stumptown Tree Dun City, and in 2017, it entered Chinese mainland and opened its first branch in Shanghai.
