King Ludwig Beerhall - Reviews

Hong Kong is a typical migrant society, with a population of about 7 million at the end of 2017. Expatriates account for about 7% of the total population, not including foreigners who have become naturalized in Hong Kong. The multiculturalism of Hong Kong cuisine is not limited to Chinese cuisine, and there is a wide variety of exotic cuisines, which are flourishing everywhere in Hong Kong.

Most of the exotic restaurants are founded by foreigners after immigrating to Hong Kong, and there are very few that can form a chain scale. Founded in 1992, Dile Deutschland Restaurant is a subsidiary of King Lok Group, a well-known catering company in Hong Kong, with more than 20 catering brands and more than 30 themed restaurants in Hong Kong. As the first German restaurant to open in Hong Kong, the four branches in Hong Kong are full every day.

The English name of the restaurant is King Ludwig. Legend has it that King Ludwig II founded the famous Department of Brewing Science in 1868, which inherited and promoted the beer culture, and many German restaurants named it after it, and Ludwig beer has become a representative brand of German beer. German cuisine is mainly based on large portions of meat, and the price is within a reasonable range, which is in stark contrast to the exquisite Western food, and is known as the "Northeast cuisine" of Europe. The signature German salted pork knuckle is the restaurant's specialty, which is marinated in Germany before being shipped to Hong Kong and grilled in the store's special German oven. When served, the pork knuckle has been grilled until golden brown, remember to ask the waiter to cut the pork knuckle for serving. The pork knuckle is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the saltiness is moderate, the pork fully absorbs the fat, not firewood at all, and is served with sauerkraut and potatoes on the plate to relieve greasyness. The portion of pork knuckle is very large, and if you eat it for 2 people, you only need to order another dessert. Also a large portion of the meat is the German sausage platter, a total of three sausages, also served with sauerkraut and potatoes at the bottom of the plate, and the casing is chewy and full of meat.

When you come to a German restaurant, you can't help but order German beer. All beers on the drink menu are imported, but we recommend the ARCOBRAU series of draft beers, which can be selected in 1L and 0.5L bottles, each with its own German flavor. The famous dark beer is called Arcobrau Schioss Dunkel Draught, which has a rich brown color, a thick mouthfeel, and a creamy foam that is more bitter than regular beer. For those who are afraid of bitterness, you can order another Arcobrau Urfass Draught beer, which has a very mellow aroma.

In addition to daily ordering, you can choose from light meals and sausage buffets at lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, with prices ranging from HK$200 to HK$250 per person at each store. In addition, 9-12 p.m. is a happy hour, and 0.5L beer is heavily discounted.

All the storefronts may seem small and unremarkable, but the interior is actually very large. The restaurant is decorated in a very German style, with most of the tables and chairs using German benches, the ceiling is decorated with ribbons, and there is a live band in the evening, so you can feel the enthusiasm of the Germans when you enter the door. Most of our staff are Hong Kong and can speak English and Cantonese, so simple Mandarin is not a problem. Please note that the food menu is available in English and Chinese, but the alcohol menu is only in English, so please ask the staff if you have any questions.

In addition, it is customary in Western countries to voluntarily give a certain amount of tips to the service staff after a meal to show gratitude and remuneration for their services. In Hong Kong, which blends Chinese and Western cultures, this fee has been conventionally included in the bill, commonly known as a service fee. Most medium-sized restaurants and above will charge a 10% service charge, while other cafes and fast food outlets will not charge. It should be noted that Hong Kong F&B does not allow guests to bring their own drinks and cakes, and if they do, they will have to pay corkage and cake cutting fees.

Overall, the German restaurant is similar to a music bar in China, which is more suitable for friends to gather to eat, drink and have fun, it is easier to order food when there are more people, and there are not many dishes to try if the number of people is too small. If you are arriving on a holiday or a major ball match day, please reserve your seat in advance.

The pork knuckle skin is roasted very crispy, the meat is not woody, and the saltiness is just right.
German sausage platter with sauerkraut and potato salad
It is divided into a mini sausage platter for 1-2 people and a German sausage platter for 2-3 people, and the content is the same, but the size of the intestines is different. The sausage casing is chewy and the meat has a good texture, so it's worth trying.
