In the mid-19th century, Englishman Henry Christy discovered a sample of terry fabric while traveling in Constantinople (now Istanbul), and he brought it back to England to be remanufactured and patented by a machine designed by his company's employees, thus successfully making the world's first terry towel. In 1850, the first Christy towel factory opened, and the history of the Christy brand began. Because of the peculiarities of its fabric construction, Christy towels were very popular as soon as they were introduced. In 1851, Christy became Queen Victoria's appointed towel brand at the inaugural International Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London, providing high-quality toiletries to the royal family. Christy has also partnered with a variety of sporting events, providing player towels for Wimbledon, one of tennis' four Grand Slams, since 1987, and the use of Christy towels on Centre Court has become a tournament icon and a favorite souvenir for tennis players.
