In the mid-19th century, Englishman Henry Christy discovered a sample of terry fabric while traveling in Constantinople (now Istanbul), and he brought it back to England to be remanufactured and patented by a machine designed by his company's employees, thus successfully making the world's first terry towel. In 1850, the first Christy towel factory opened, and the history of the Christy brand began.
