At the historic 1976 Paris Trial, it was the fledgling Deer Leap Cellar that won the first place in the red wine group, beating top Bordeaux wines such as Château Mouton, Château Hauber and Château de la Rose. It can be said that Deer Leap Wine Cellars has focused the world's attention on Napa Valley and has been the driving force behind the take-off of American red wines.
Founded in 1970 in Napa Valley, Deer Leap Cellars is owned by an experienced winemaker who worked under Robert Mondavi, the father of American wine, as the winery's chief winemaker. Deer Leap Cellars began the production of its first vintage in 1972.
The former is the first vineyard of the Deer Leap Cellars, with mostly volcanic rock, multi-layered structure, well-drained, warm afternoons and cool nights, planted with about 14 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and 0.6 hectares of Merlot, and Fay Vineyard, which was acquired by the Cellar in 1986, is the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the region, with gravelly soil, consisting of 26.7 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and 0.2 hectares of Veranda grapes. S.L.V. Vineyards and FAR Vineyards both produce single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon dry red wines, with average international pre-tax prices of US$152 and US$137, respectively.
Named after the number of oak barrels at the time of maturation, Cask 23 is the first wine of Deer Leap Cellars, which was first made at the Paris Trials. The Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are selected from the S.L.V. vineyards and the FAR vineyards, fermented in stainless steel vats and then matured for 20 months in 90% new French oak barrels. Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon has an unrestrained and enthusiastic style, with a strong skeleton, rich tannins, and the flavor of red fruits and black berries, and the domestic price is about 2900 yuan.
