Recommended wine: Mousigny Grand Cru red wine
Also a Burgundy estate, Le Birch and Romanée Conti are inextricably linked: Henri Le Birch has recreated the former glory of Château Romanée-Conti, and his daughter La Lule Le Birch has single-handedly created Château Le Birch, which rivals Romanée Conti, and won the 2018 Top 100 Wines list published by the London International Wine Exchange (Liv-ex) in collaboration with The Drinks Business.
At present, there are two types of Le Birch wines circulating in the market: one is the wine, which is produced in the vineyard of Domaine Leroy; The first category is the wine of the vintner, where the grapes are purchased from the surrounding winegrowers, rather than from their own estates, and belong to the Maison Leroy. Because the former is generally red and the latter is white, it is also called "red-headed birch" and "white-headed birch" respectively. Generally speaking, the quality and price of the white-headed birch are lower than that of the red-headed birch.
Lalule birch insists on planting and harvesting refinement: abandon any chemical fertilizers, do not use herbicides and insecticides; Harvest in small baskets by hand to avoid grape squeezing and damage; Strict screening ensures that the quality of the fruits involved in fermentation is uniform and outstanding. This series of delicate operations, which are contrary to high efficiency, directly affects the output of Le Hua Winery, but also ensures the excellent quality of its wines.
Most of the vineyards are Grand Cru and First Class, but there are also village and regional vineyards, with a total area of about 22 hectares. Each of the nine Grand Cru produces a Pinot Noir red wine, the most famous and expensive of which is the Musigny dry red wine.
Mousigny at Château Le Birch is one of the most sought-after premium wines today, with an average international price of around $15,000 before taxes, second only to Romanée Conti, according to Wine Searcher. However, the cultivation area of the birch is smaller, only 0.27 hectares, so the yield is scarce and more valuable than that of the Grand Cru of Romanée Conti, so most of the time it is in a state of pricelessness.
The style of Mousini's wines is often described as "an iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove", and one wine writer described this Mousiny Grand Cru from Château Le Birch: La Lule Birch stuffs this wine with breathtaking depth and intensity. When this deep Pinot Noir is properly grown, it reveals just the right balance and elegance, with delicate aromas of vanilla, mint and red berries, a soft and smooth texture, conservative tannins and a long finish.
