The Peninsula Lobby - Business Reviews

In Hong Kong, there are many places where you can enjoy afternoon tea, but the Peninsula has always maintained the ritual of English afternoon tea for a hundred years. It has witnessed the ups and downs of countless celebrities and aristocrats, and since 1928, The Peninsula has been a part of Hong Kong's history.

The concept of afternoon tea originated in the Victorian era of England, while eating Western pastries while drinking tea, chatting with friends, was the daily life of the British aristocracy at that time, people called this kind of afternoon tea high tea. Traditional English afternoon tea is quite distinctive, one is the three stacked refreshments, the second is different types of English black tea, and the third is exquisite tableware, all three are indispensable. The Peninsula Afternoon Tea continues the same recipe for the English Afternoon Tea, with three tiers of shelves topped with grape muffins, finger sandwiches, shortbread and French biscuits, paired with the hotel's homemade cream cream and strawberry jam. There are various varieties of tea, in addition to the traditional black tea category, there are also flower and fruit tea, vanilla tea and other options to choose from. The Peninsula has been paying attention to tableware since its opening, pursuing the principle of matching food and utensils. Porcelain plates and cups are custom-made for Japanese bone china brand NIKKO and feature the Peninsula logo, while the teapot and tea drain are made of sterling silverware.

Despite its identity, those who choose to enjoy afternoon tea at The Peninsula are not just for the taste of the food. The Peninsula Hotel is the perfect place to experience Hong Kong's history and culture, with writer Eileen Cheung sitting in the lobby of The Peninsula enjoying afternoon tea depicting "Love in a Fallen City", and Leslie Cheung's collaboration with Wong Kar-wai began with afternoon tea on The Peninsula. The Peninsula lobby was renovated in the 1960s, and while the original fans, chandeliers and stained-glass windows were removed, 76 animal head sculptures have been preserved to this day. Sitting in the lobby of the hotel, you can see the animal heads with different images on the pillars, as if watching the customers come and go, listening to countless stories, and feeling the impermanence of life.

If intricate utensils and retro scenes are the shape of The Peninsula Afternoon Tea, then a live band must be the indispensable soul of Afternoon Tea. In the corner of the attic on the second floor of the hotel, the musicians in suits and leather shoes play music for customers who come to enjoy afternoon tea with pianos, cellos, flutes and other musical instruments. Compared with the music played by the stereo, the live music is more traditional and retro, and when you are immersed in it, it seems that you can instantly travel to the past and overlap with history.

Even if you are not a guest of The Peninsula Hotel, you can experience the service of a five-star hotel just by enjoying afternoon tea here. From the moment the porter opens the glass door of the Peninsula Hotel, every step of the way is the service standard of a five-star hotel. When the afternoon tea is served, the service staff will introduce the name of the tea order. The lobby manager will observe the situation of each table from a certain distance, such as whether it needs to be refilled, closing, etc.

If you can only have one chance for afternoon tea in Hong Kong, the Peninsula Hotel must be the first choice. However, except for guests staying on the peninsula, the hotel lobby does not accept any reservations for afternoon tea, and can only go to the site to queue up. Afternoon tea is served from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., so it's best to line up early on weekends or holidays. Even if you're too early, you can still spend time at the Peninsula Hotel's Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Givenchy and other brands. It should be noted that the default language in the hotel is English, and if you use Cantonese or Mandarin, the waiter can understand it, but you are often not fluent in Mandarin. There is also a certain dress code for afternoon tea on the peninsula, sportswear, beachwear, and flip-flops are not allowed.

The Peninsula Afternoon Tea Set is priced at HKD388 per person and a slight discount for couples, with a choice of other items.
