Orphan Espresso is a workshop-level manufacturer run by renowned American collectors Doug and Barb Garrott. They created the Lido series of hand grinders as a nod to the old-fashioned hand grinders, which have also gained a high level of recognition in the industry and are considered by most coffee fans to be one of the best hand grinders.
The Lido grinder has evolved over three generations, and the first generation, the Lido, is no longer available for purchase. The second-generation products are Lido 2 and Lido E, of which Lido E is an Italian hand grinder, with a finer scale adjustment, which can grind the particle size used by the Italian machine, and is one of the few hand grinders on the market that can grind stable Italian fine powder; Lido 2 is specially designed for hand punching masters, the appearance of these two models is the same as the price, both prices are around 1,000 yuan. The highlight of the third generation is that it is made of anti-static plastic on the basis of the second generation, and the original glass body is abandoned, which effectively reduces the residual powder rate and is more durable. Both the Lido 3 and Lido ET feature foldable handles, tools and a portable package, making them lighter than the second generation.
The second and third generations of Lido use 48mm tapered metal sharpening knives, which are larger than ordinary hand-sharpened knives, so the grinding efficiency is higher, but the resistance is greater and more laborious. Compared to a regular Hario hand mill, Lido grinds the same weight of coffee beans with a doubling number of turns. The coffee powder ground ground with Lido has a very good uniformity, less fine powder, three-dimensional particles, which can improve the extraction rate and reduce bitterness, which is comparable to a thousand-yuan electric grinder, and is suitable for use as a household single product or Italian grinder.
The stability of the bearings of the hand grinder will affect the grinding feel, and the LIDO series uses copper bearings, which are more stable than other grinders. Overall, the several grinders in the Lido series are not very different, and the quality of the powder is excellent, even though the Lido2 and Lido 3 are not designed for Italian style, but they can grind the size of Italian grain. The only drawback is that it weighs about 1 kg, making it inconvenient to carry.
Lido needs to be calibrated to ensure the accuracy of the bottom column and sharpening, so that it is not afraid of the effects of body deformation, but it also increases the difficulty of use for the average user.
