Alfa Romeo is a well-known Italian manufacturer of cars and sports cars, founded in 1910 and headquartered in Milan. Formerly known as ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), the company traces its roots to 1907 as an automobile company founded in Milan by Alessandre Darracq. In 1916, Nicola Romeo, who was born in Naples, took over the factory and incorporated his family name into the name of the factory, thus becoming the Alfa Romeo of today. In 1986 the company was acquired by the Fiat Group.
In 1910, when Alfa Romeo was founded, the founders combined two logos of the city of Milan to create a logo: the red cross was part of the coat of arms of the city of Milan to commemorate the Crusader knights of the ancient Crusades, and the biscoine was inspired by the coat of arms of an ancient local aristocratic family (the Visconti family), symbolizing the legend of the ancestors of the medieval Milanese lord Duke of Visconte who fought off the "dragon snake" that caused the suffering of the people of the city. The combination of two logos, which represent the Milanese tradition and have no connection in meaning, has become one of the most famous symbols in the automotive world.
The Alfa Romeo and Milan letterings and spacer patterns, which were added later, have also undergone subtle changes over the course of more than 100 years. The most recent change occurred in 1971, when the dragon-like snake became simple and abstract, the style of the logo was modernized, the hyphen between Alfa and Romeo was removed, and most importantly, the word "MILAND" disappeared – does this mean that some kind of xenophobic local complex is weakening in information and will be replaced by a more open mind.
