The Camus family
Since its founding in 1863, Camus has been family-owned and managed, with each generation striving for excellence in quality and expanding the market for the Camus brand around the world.
True to the tradition of five generations, Camus is a well-deserved "cognac family".
Jean-Baptiste Camus (founded Camus in 1863)
Jean-Baptiste Camus is a winemaker in the Borderies district of Cognac. He sells his distilled cognacs to some of the largest cognac houses, which in turn sell cognacs under their own brands.
In 1863, Jean-Baptiste Camus, convinced of the quality of his cognacs, formed a group called "La Grande Marque" with a number of other winemakers in the Cognac region to put ripe cognacs on the market.
Around 1890, Jean-Baptiste had acquired all the shares of the partners and added his surname to the name of the company. Now, the official name of the company is Camus 'La Grande Marque'.
Five generations later, Jean-Baptiste had established a rule that the Camus family had absolute control over every step of the process, from growing the grapes to bottling.
Edmond Camus (family business since 1894)
The eldest of two sons of Jean-Baptiste, Edmond became involved in the family business around 1895, gradually taking over from his father the distillation and blending of all Camus cognacs.
Based in Butney, Edmond not only had to maintain the quality of the growing Camus, but also to expand Camus's presence in France, especially in Paris, where all the most famous restaurants and pubs in France served Camus cognacs.
In 1913, Edmond created Jubilee to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Camus Company. To this day, this special wine is still served in a Baccarat crystal bottle.
Edmond was one of the first wineries to ship cognac with glass bottles instead of oak barrels.
Gaston Camus (family business since 1896)Gaston's brother takes care of all aspects of production, and he is responsible for expanding the Camus market, exporting it to all parts of Europe and as far away as Eastern Europe.
Gaston spent six months in St. Petersburg almost every year, and Camus cognac became the wine of choice at the court of the last Russian tsar. Despite Russia's revolutions, wars, political upheavals, and economic crises, Camus's position in Russia remains as strong as a rock.
Under Gaston's direction, Camus established a unique position as the only major cognac to sell only the finest cognacs,
Gaston's only son, Michel, was born in 1911 and is the sole male heir to the third generation of the Camus family, but Michel has four sisters and three cousins.
Michel Camus (family business since 1932)
After years of diligent study with his father, Gaston, Michel joined Camus in 1932 at the age of 21.
Michel maintained the tradition of controlling the production of all Camus cognacs, following his father's travels around the world.
In 1959, Michel signed an agreement to make Camus the exclusive supplier of French wines and spirits to the Soviet Union at the time, as well as the exclusive importer of Russian spirits to France.
Michel travels extensively and is the first in his industry to appreciate the potential of the fledgling duty-free shopping market. In the early 1960s, he developed a strategy and introduced new products specifically for this market, which are still bestsellers in duty-free shops at airports around the world, especially Camus cognac in Limoges and Baccarat.
To this day, Camus is still the leading brand in duty-free shops and in-flight shopping around the world.
Jean-Paul Camus (family business since 1967)
Jean-Paul, a member of the Camus family, became President and Master Blender of the Camus Company in 1977.
Building on the foundation of the Camus Duty Free business, Jean-Paul is now focusing on expanding Camus' home markets across Asia as a "new frontier" for the company.
He travels frequently to Japan, China, South Korea and Malaysia to promote the Camus brand to these promising and growing markets. Thanks to his efforts, Camus has become the benchmark for fine cognacs throughout Asia.
Jean-Paul's ability to discern the preferences of cognac drinkers led him to create products such as Extra and Grand Cru XO and, more recently, Joséphine, the first cognac designed specifically for women.
Both of Jean-Paul's sons joined Camus, allowing him to focus on strategic planning and travel around the world to meet with many friends, and of course, to drink the best Camus cognac.
