Pernod Ricard (China) Trading Co., Ltd., Mumm, one of the top ten brands of champagne, was founded in Germany in 1827, a famous luxury champagne, a pioneer in the champagne industry, and its red belt champagne enjoys a high reputation as a classic of the Mumm brand
Since 1827, it has been at the heart of the Champagne industry. The first page of the legendary winemaking history of Château G.H.MUMM was written long before the winery was officially founded in 1827. The lineage of the House of Mam dates back to the 12th century and includes titles of baron and knight. As early as 1761, the owner of the winery, Peter Arnold Mamm, started a wine production and trading house in Cologne, Germany, under the name "P.A. MUMM". The company has large vineyards in the Rhine valley, where it makes its own wines.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the three sons of Peter Arnold Mam, Gottlieb, Jacob and Philippe, discovered the potential to sell the excellent sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France. Due to the good relations between Germany and France at the time, the Malm brothers made the bold decision to establish a new branch of their family company in the Champagne region, based in Reims, with the local G. Heuser joined.
The MUMM family
Von Marm is one of the oldest aristocratic families in Germany, with ancestors dating back to the Middle Ages. It first became involved in winemaking in the 18th century, and in 1761 Peter Arnold Mamm decided to establish a wine production and marketing business in Cologne.
He passed on his passion to his sons, Jacob, Gottlieb and Philippe, who became pioneers of the burgeoning French champagne industry. The three sons crossed the border and officially founded the Champagne house in Reims in 1827.
In 1852, one of the heirs to the family business, Georg Hermann Mahm, became the head of the company. He established the exclusive vineyard of Château Mamm, laid the foundation for the company's growth strategy, and emphasized the philosophy of "everything is based on excellence". As an enlightened person and a champion of social progress, he developed the Outstanding Contribution Bonus and Disability Allowance to reward outstanding workers and provide financial assistance to elderly and disabled employees. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of the company's founding fathers, Georges Hermann Mum travelled tirelessly around the globe to market his champagnes in Europe and as far away as Australia and New Zealand. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the company already had a large market share in the world, with 20 subsidiaries in the United States, Russia and Canada, as far away as Brazil and Peru. George Hermann Mæm's greatest creation is the famous "Red Belt Champagne". First released in 1875, it remains a symbol of G.H.MUMM quality today.
The MMM family is also known for embracing new ideas and their desire to take on challenges, and its members include notable personalities who have not only achieved success in the field of winemaking. For example, pilot Walter von Marm, who made his first test flight of a monoplane with aviator Louis Blério. Walter von Mamm was also a four-man bobsledder who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics and championships.
Wine region and terroir
The exclusive vineyards of G.H.MUMM, covering almost 218 hectares of land. In the mountains near Reims, Pinot Noir dominates (78%), the Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant and Avize in the Cote des Blancs are famous for their Chardonnay grapes, and the Marne Valley is dominated by Pinot Meunier.
The same classification of the Champagne region that has been in place since 1911 is still in use today. It classifies wine regions in terms of soil quality, sunrise and grape variety. Out of 319 wineries, 17 Grand Cru (100% homegrown) and 42 Premier Cru were awarded.
98% of G.H.MUMM's vineyards have long been classified in the Champagne terroir category, and its Grand Cru includes 8 historic châteaux spread over 160 hectares. They are the most authentic expression of the best styles of Champagne: Ay, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay, Mailly, Avize and Cramant.
The G.H.MUMM family has long focused on establishing a quality assurance system to ensure the highest quality juices, overseeing every stage of production, from the cultivation of the grapes to the most critical pressing phase.
Château Mum pioneered the operation of installing a juicer in the plantation to extract the juice directly, and its close relationship with the vineyards of the wine region has remained unwavering for almost 100 years and continues to this day. In 1840, when the company acquired the first plot of land in Verzenay, it established the mechanism of integrated cultivation and juicing, which is still used today.
G.H.MUMM also established a policy of direct supply, unprecedented at the time: sourcing the best grapes directly from growers, rather than unfermented juices. This ensures the quality of the grapes, which are extracted by the company itself. The company has a stronger connection with the vineyards, guaranteeing that the company is able to pursue the "best" quality.
Champagne of the King
In 1904, G.H. MUMM was awarded the first honour to attend the Derby Day Jockey Club banquet at Buckingham Palace as the official supplier of the British royal family.
In recognition of this honor, the company created a special label with the words: "G.H.MUMM Company, Champagne of the King" and decorated with the coat of arms of the British royal family.
To this day, G.H.MUMM remains the official supplier of Queen Elizabeth II, and its neck is still adorned with a royal certificate.
When Cordon Cordon Rouge was launched in the English market in 1900, the slogan was "The most expensive is the best". G.H.MUMM CHAMPAGNE has always been relatively expensive. When the company was founded in 1827, the wholesale market price of Champagne was 2.75 francs, while it was priced at 3.5 francs.
That's the price you pay for higher quality. The company's resolute export strategy also led to a rise in sales from 500,000 bottles in 1879 to 3 million bottles in 1913, making it the leading champagne house at the time.
Champagne Le Rouge Belt: the birth of a flagship
In 1876, Georges Hermann Mum made the decision to reshape the fortunes of the winery. As a token of his appreciation for his valued customers, he decorates the neck of each bottle of Cuvée with a red ribbon inspired by the honours bestowed on these illustrious men: the Chevalier de l'Ordre Saint-Louis and the red ribbon of the Legion of Honor.
This red ribbon celebrates the feat and firmly establishes G.H.MUMM's position as an ambassador of the Champagne spirit. G.H.MUMM Red Ribbon champagne was featured in early 20th-century poster art, Hergé's famous comic book series The Adventures of Tintin, as well as in the pen and film of artists such as Utrillo and Tsuguharu Fujita.
G.H.MUMM Cordon Bleu Champagne is still the go-to choice for celebrities to dine out or celebrate, and has always been a hallmark of star cuisine.
