Xi'an Institute of Physical Education was founded in 1954, located in the ancient city of Xi'an Little Wild Goose Pagoda on the west side, is one of the first six sports colleges established in New China, originally under the State General Administration of Sports (State Sports Commission), in 2001 the implementation of the central and local co-construction, to local management, is now the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the State General Administration of Sports co-construction colleges.
In the early days of the establishment of the college, Marshal He Long personally selected the site for the college circle and encouraged teachers and students to inherit and carry forward the spirit of Yan'an and work hard, so that the college established the purpose of "emphasizing learning and teaching, cultivating talents, serving sports, and blessing the people". After that, the main leaders of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China (State Sports Commission) Rong Gaotang, Li Menghua, Wu Shaozu, Yuan Weimin, Liu Peng, etc., successively visited the college to guide the work, care for and support the construction and development of the college. Through the unremitting efforts and historical accumulation of several generations of Western sports people, it has formed the tradition and characteristics of "honesty and frugality, diligence and hard work, unity and hard work, truth-seeking and innovation, patriotism and glory", and has cultivated more than 30,000 high-quality sports talents for the country.
The college has two campuses: the main campus and Fengyukou. There are 819 faculty members, including 538 full-time teachers, including 67 professors and 162 associate professors; There are 361 teachers with master's degree or above, accounting for 67% of the total number of teachers; 61 have doctoral degrees, accounting for 11.3% of the total number of teachers; There are 5 experts and scholars with the honorary titles of Outstanding Contribution Expert of Shaanxi Province, Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Academic and Technical Leader of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China, and Famous Teacher of Shaanxi Province; There are 68 master's supervisors.
The college recruits students from all over the country, with 9,417 full-time students, 8,220 undergraduates, and 597 master's students. At present, there are 8 departments (Department of Physical Education, Department of Sports Training, Department of Martial Arts, Department of Social Sports and Leisure Sports, Department of Health Sciences, Department of Sports Media, Department of Physical Education, Department of Sports Arts, Department of Sports Economics and Sports Management), 2 departments (Graduate School, Department of Ideology and Politics), 1 School (School of Continuing Education), and 1 School (Affiliated Competitive Sports School).
In 1957, the college began to recruit undergraduate students majoring in physical education, and now has 18 undergraduate majors (7 majors in physical education and 11 majors in non-physical education), covering 6 professional categories of economics, science, education, literature, management and art. It has 3 national-level characteristic professional construction sites (physical education, sports training, sports human science), 3 provincial-level characteristic professional construction sites (ethnic traditional sports, performance, applied psychology), and 2 provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects (physical education, sports training); 1 national excellent course (track and field), 12 provincial excellent courses (basketball, football, gymnastics, aerobics, rhythmic gymnastics, sanda, martial arts routines, exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sports economics, introduction to physical education, school physical education); There are 6 provincial-level teaching teams (track and field, basketball, aerobics, sports human science, social sports, gymnastics), 2 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers (sports human science experimental center, computer experimental teaching center), 4 provincial-level talent training model innovation pilot areas (sports rehabilitation promotion, track and field, sports art performance, martial arts performance (classical martial arts)) and 1 provincial off-campus practical education base.
The college has first-class teaching and training venues, including a sports human science experiment center, a journalism experiment center, a speech experiment center, and a computer experiment center. The library is the sports science literature and information center in Northwest China, with a total collection of more than 660,000 volumes. The campus network is equipped with advanced equipment, connecting the two campuses and laying out more than 8,500 information points. The college has a national social sports instructor training base, a national high-level sports reserve talent base, a national taekwondo training base, a national aerobics training base, a national judo intermediate and senior coach training center, a Chinese bocce training center, a high-level track and field talent training center in Northwest China and other talent training platforms, so far a total of 328 gold medals have been won in major international and domestic sports competitions, winning glory for the country and adding luster to Shaanxi and the college.
The college began to recruit master's students in 1979, and was approved as a master's training unit in 1986, and now has 2 master's degree authorization points of first-level disciplines (physical education, psychology) and 9 master's degree authorization points of second-level disciplines (physical education and training, sports human science, sports humanities and sociology, ethnic traditional physical education, sports management, sports arts, practical psychology, sports medicine, curriculum and teaching theory), and 1 key discipline (physical education) construction point in Shaanxi Province. Two Shaanxi Provincial Colleges and Universities Philosophy and Social Science Characteristic Discipline Construction Project (Western Sports and Regional Social Development, Ethnic and Folk Traditional Sports Culture) are the first batch of pilot units for master's degrees in physical education, and began to cooperate with Shanghai University of Sport and other institutions to train doctoral students in 2004.
At present, the college has the Key Research Base of Sports Social Sciences of the General Administration of Sport of China, the Key Laboratory of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China - Sports Technology Analysis and Skill Assessment, the Sports Culture Research Base of the General Administration of Sport of China, and the Sports Law Research Base of Colleges and Universities in Shaanxi Province. In the past five years, he has undertaken 14 projects of the National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation, 1 project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 soft science research projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 2 key projects of the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" of the Ministry of Science and Technology. There are 82 provincial and ministerial projects, including 48 research projects of the Social Science Fund, 11 scientific research projects for the Olympic Games, 6 scientific research projects of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and 17 natural science research projects.
The college attaches great importance to opening up to the outside world, actively carries out foreign cooperation and exchanges, and has established inter-university relations and cooperative relations with more than 20 countries such as Japan, the United States, Russia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and 30 universities and research institutions in Hong Kong and Macao, which has accelerated the internationalization process of the college and expanded its international influence.
