Founded in 1956, Guangzhou University of Physical Education is the only independent institution of higher learning in South China with undergraduate and postgraduate education, with the right to evaluate associate professors and confer master's degrees. In 2008, he passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education with excellent results.
The school has about 8,000 students and more than 900 graduate students, and has jointly run schools with the Handhockey Baseball and Softball Center of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China to train graduate students, and jointly with Shanghai University of Sport to train doctoral students.
The school has 6 disciplines: Education, Literature, Economics, Management, Art, and Medicine. It has 10 master's authorization points: the first-level discipline of physical education is a key discipline in Guangdong Province, and there are 7 second-level discipline master's authorization points, namely physical education and training, sports humanities and sociology, sports human science, ethnic traditional physical education, leisure sports, sports journalism and communication, and sports rehabilitation; and a master's degree in sports medicine, journalism and communication, and physical education.
There are 18 undergraduate majors: Physical Education, Sports Training, Martial Arts and Traditional Sports, Social Sports Guidance and Management, Sports Human Science, Leisure Sports, Special Education, Journalism, Broadcasting and Hosting Arts, Dance, Dance Performance, Sports Rehabilitation, Economics, Public Utilities Management, Preschool Education, Performance, Radio and Television Choreography, and Rehabilitation Therapy.
Among them, three majors, including sports human science, physical education, and social sports guidance and management, are the construction points of national characteristic majors. The three majors of journalism, martial arts and traditional national sports, and sports training are the characteristic majors of Guangdong Province. The two majors of physical education and sports human science are famous majors in Guangdong Province; The leisure sports major is a key major in Guangdong Province; The six majors of physical education, special education, leisure sports, sports human science, dance, martial arts and traditional ethnic sports are the pilot projects of comprehensive professional reform in Guangdong Province.

The school library is the largest sports literature and information center in South China, and the archives have become the "national second-level science and technology archives management unit".
The school has undertaken a number of major projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Fund, and the Olympic Science and Technology Research Project, and has won the title of "Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award", "Advanced Collective of Science and Technology Olympics" and a large number of scientific invention patents.
