Since its establishment, Shanghai University of Sport has always taken talent training and knowledge innovation as its own responsibility, and strived to carry the glorious mission of "developing sports, enhancing people's physique, and promoting sports culture", and is the cradle of cultivating high-level sports talents in China. The college was originally directly under the General Administration of Sport of China, and was jointly established and managed by the General Administration of Sport of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in 2001.
After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has formed a complete level of education covering undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees. The university is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China to obtain the right to confer master's degree (1981) and doctoral degree (1986), and in 2003, it became the first-level discipline of physical education, and is the only institution in the country that has the right to confer doctorate degrees in all four second-level disciplines of physical education. The university has a doctoral degree program in physical education, an academic master's degree program in physical education, applied psychology, medical technology (rehabilitation therapy), and journalism, as well as a master's degree program in sports, art, journalism and communication, and public administration.
The school adheres to the policy of "paying equal attention to characteristics and quality, and promoting each other between discipline construction and talent training", and in the process of actively docking with the national (regional) development strategy, it promotes the development of the school with the times, and has condensed the direction and accumulated advantages in the fields of physical education and training, sports health and rehabilitation, sports news and communication, sports industry economy, sports public management and sports art, and the sports discipline has been included in the 21 Class I peak discipline construction plans of Shanghai universities. At present, six provincial and ministerial key laboratories (bases) have been successfully established, including the Key Laboratory of Sports and Fitness Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education, the Key Research Base of the General Administration of Physical Education, Social Science and Sports, and the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Human Athletic Ability Development and Guarantee.
After more than 60 years of development, the level of the teaching staff has been significantly improved, the quality of talent training has been continuously improved, and a large number of outstanding talents have been cultivated for the development of national sports and industry. One doctoral dissertation won the "National 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations", more than 10 master's and doctoral dissertations won the "Shanghai Graduate Outstanding Achievement (Dissertation) Award", and the undergraduate scientific and technological innovation works won 2 second prizes and 10 third prizes of the national "Challenge Cup". The school has established a teaching institution "Yunrui Academy" to cultivate top-notch innovative and entrepreneurial talents, and explored the training mode of sports innovation and entrepreneurship talents. In 2014, he won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award.

As a Chinese Government Scholarship qualified school and the only pilot institution designated by the Ministry of Education to independently recruit Chinese Government Scholarship international students, the school has established inter-university cooperative relations with more than 70 universities and institutions in 25 countries and regions, and currently has more than 1,000 international students from 59 countries including the United States, France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea. The university has extensively expanded cooperation in running schools, improved the internationalization level of talent training, cooperated with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to establish the European branch of the China Table Tennis Academy, carried out in-depth cooperation with world-class sports universities such as the University of Sports Cologne, and cooperated with the Macao Polytechnic Institute to hold a master's degree program in sports in Macao. At present, the China Table Tennis Academy has been named the highest college-level affiliated training base of the ITTF, and the International Handball Academy and the IAAF Special Training and Certification Center have been jointly established with the International Handball Federation and the IAAF.
The school has won 5 Olympic gold medals, 1 Olympic silver medal, 5 Olympic bronze medals, 28 World Championship gold medals, 39 Asian Games and Asian Championship gold medals. 3 people broke the world record 3 times, 2 people broke the Asian record 12 times; He won 18 gold medals in the National Games for Shanghai. The school is affiliated with the Sports Industry Branch of the Chinese Sports Science Society, the Wushu and Traditional National Sports Branch of the Chinese Sports Science Society, and the Sports Health Science Branch of the Chinese Gerontology and Geriatrics Society.
