Chengdu Institute of Physical Education, founded in 1942, is a full-time general institution of higher learning jointly established by the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government

Chengdu Institute of Physical Education was founded in 1942, formerly known as Sichuan Provincial Sports College, and was taken over by the People's Government in 1950 and renamed Chengdu Sports College. In 1953, the whole system was changed to Southwest Institute of Physical Education, and in 1956, it was renamed to its current name. The school was originally subordinate to the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China, but was transferred to the local government in 2001 and implemented the full-time ordinary colleges and universities jointly established by the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government, and mainly managed by Sichuan Province. The school covers a total area of 480,000 square meters and is located in the central district of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, adjacent to the Wuhou Temple, a famous historical spot at home and abroad. The school has an elegant environment, reasonable infrastructure layout, and public service systems such as sports training venues, teaching, scientific research and experimental instruments and equipment, library and literature security, and related school buildings can better meet the needs of discipline development and talent training. The school adheres to the school motto of "Unremitting Practice, Accumulation of Health", adheres to the principle of survival by quality, development by characteristics, brand by discipline, and development by teachers, and has formed a distinctive school-running characteristic of "focusing on sports, infiltrating sports and medicine, and combining sports and culture". The university has more than 9,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 1,100 doctoral and master's students. The school is a doctorate-granting institution, with 4 colleges (School of Football and Sports, School of Sports Medicine and Health, Graduate School, School of Continuing Education), 9 departments (Department of Physical Education and Training I, Department of Physical Education and Training II, Department of Physical Education and Training III, Department of Martial Arts, Department of Economics and Management, Department of Journalism, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Art, Department of Leisure and Physical Education), as well as 16 teaching units, including the Institute of Sports History, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Health, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Health, the Institute of Sports History and Health, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Health, the Department of Ideological and Political Theory Courses, the Affiliated Secondary Sports School, and the Affiliated Athletic Sports School. There are 1 "Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory of Sports Medicine" and 1 "Key Laboratory of Sports Medicine of the General Administration of Sports of China", and 2 Sichuan Provincial University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. The school edits and publishes academic journals "Journal of Chengdu Institute of Physical Education" and "Research on Physical Education", among which "Journal of Chengdu University of Physical Education" is a core journal in Chinese, a characteristic scientific and technological journal of Chinese universities, and a CSSC source journal. The sports hospital affiliated to the university is a postdoctoral innovation practice base in Sichuan Province and a national postdoctoral research station. The school also has a museum dedicated to the history of sports.

The school is a national high-level sports reserve talent training base, a national weightlifting reserve talent training base, a national martial arts taolu youth training base and a national track and field sprint and hurdle reserve talent training base, and undertakes the task of cultivating high-level competitive talents and outstanding reserve talents for the country.
