Tianjin Institute of Physical Education was established in August 1958. At that time, in accordance with the Hebei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China's "10-15 years policy of popularizing higher education and meeting the needs of the development of education and sports", and in order to prepare for the first National Games of the People's Republic of China held in Beijing in September 1959, the Hebei Provincial People's Committee decided to merge the former Tianjin Sports School and the Physical Education Department of Shijiazhuang Normal University in Tianjin, the capital of Hebei Province, and at the same time transfer outstanding athletes from the whole province to form Tianjin Sports Institute. The mission of the Academy is to train athletes, coaches, and some high school and university physical education teachers and senior sports professionals. At that time, Li Gengtao, vice governor of Hebei Province, secretary of the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee and mayor, also served as the first president. In January 1967, Tianjin was restored to a municipality directly under the central government; In October 1969, Tianjin Institute of Physical Education was transferred from Hebei Province to the jurisdiction of Tianjin Municipality.
In the early days of its establishment, the school brought together a group of outstanding coaches and athletes, with a high level of competitive sports, wrestling, women's diving, swimming, men's basketball, baseball and other sports have ranked among the top in China. In the first National Games, he won the three wrestling championships of Classic, Freestyle and Chinese. At the same time, a number of well-known experts and scholars teach in the school, such as Chen Jiaqi, Ma Yu, Niu Xinghua, Chai Wenxiu, Liu Shifan, Zheng Bida, Yao Zhizhen, Zhang Chunpei, Ren Fuxing, etc.
The school covers an area of 534 acres (356018 square meters), with 12 teaching and training halls such as comprehensive training halls, track and field halls, basketball halls, volleyball halls, swimming pools, dance halls, etc., more than 20 outdoor training venues such as international standard plastic track and field fields, football fields and lighted baseball fields, teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment with a total value of more than 120 million yuan, a total area of 7,800 square meters of school library, and a collection of more than 1.92 million volumes of literature (including electronic literature).
At present, the university has 16 undergraduate majors, involving 6 disciplines: education, management, literature, art, science, and medicine. In 1979, it began to recruit master's students, and in 1986, it was granted the right to confer master's degrees, and now there are 11 master's programs. In 2010, the university was approved by the Ministry of Education as an institution with the qualification of recommending outstanding fresh undergraduates to study for master's degree without examination. In July 2013, it was officially approved as a "doctorate-awarding unit" by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and the first-level discipline of physical education was approved as a "doctorate-granting discipline". In the third round of national discipline evaluation in 2012, the first-level discipline of physical education ranked in the top 10% of national physical education disciplines, ranking fifth. The university has more than 6,000 full-time students, including more than 5,000 undergraduates, more than 540 master's students, and 14 doctoral students.
There are 477 faculty members in the school, including 301 full-time teachers, including 55 professors, 109 associate professors, 81 teachers with doctoral degrees, and 166 teachers with master's degrees. Three majors were selected as "Characteristic Major Construction Sites" by the Ministry of Education in batches. Eight majors have been approved as the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" comprehensive investment planning brand major construction projects of Tianjin colleges and universities, and 2 majors have been approved as major construction projects related to strategic emerging industries. One major was approved by the Ministry of Education as the first batch of pilot projects for the comprehensive reform of undergraduate majors in local colleges and universities under the "Undergraduate Teaching Project". Four experimental centers were awarded the title of "Construction Unit of Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Tianjin Ordinary Colleges and Universities". The teaching achievement of "Enhancing the Comprehensive Practice Ability of Physical Education Students by Constructing a Practical Teaching Platform for Sports Psychology" won the first prize of the 6th National Teaching Achievement Award of Higher Education. In the past two years, a total of 70 projects have been approved by the "National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program of Tianjin Universities".
At present, the university has 6 provincial and ministerial scientific research institutions, including the Sports Humanities and Social Sciences Research Center, the Sports Psychology Laboratory, the Sports Physiology and Sports Medicine Laboratory, the Sports Culture Research Center and the School Sports Research Center, as well as the Tianjin Science Education Base - Physical Fitness Testing Center. Sports human science and sports humanities and sociology have always been key disciplines in Tianjin. Physical education is a first-level discipline construction project in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" comprehensive investment plan of Tianjin colleges and universities, and curriculum and pedagogy, rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy are second-level discipline construction projects. Three teams were selected as the "Innovation and Technology Team Training Program" of Tianjin Universities.
The university's scientific research strength has been continuously enhanced. In recent years, he has undertaken many provincial and ministerial scientific research projects such as the National Science and Technology Support Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Foundation of China, the Humanities and Social Science Research Fund of the Ministry of Education, the National Education Science Planning Project, the Sports Social Science Fund of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China, the Olympic Science and Technology Research Project, and the Tianjin Philosophy and Social Science Foundation Project, and the scientific research funding has increased year by year. The scientific research achievements have won many provincial and ministerial awards, and more than 40 papers have been included in SCI, SSCI, EI and ISTP.
The Journal of Tianjin University of Physical Education sponsored by the school has always been a core journal of Chinese sports, and has won the first prize of the National Excellent Scientific and Technological Journal of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, the National Journal of Excellent Natural Sciences of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, the Excellent Journal of Tianjin and the First-Class Journal, and was rated as an excellent journal in northern China in 2007 and 2009 respectively, and was included as a source journal by 12 well-known search institutions at home and abroad.
The school attaches great importance to the cultivation of high-level competitive sports talents, and actively explores new models and new ways to combine sports and education and cultivate high-level competitive talents under the new situation. Baseball, soft tennis, Chinese wrestling, rattan ball and other sports are the traditional advantages of the college, and our teachers and students have achieved excellent results in the World Cup, Asian Games, national championships and other competitions as coaches and athletes, and have a great influence at home and abroad. Since 2009, the school has been entrusted by the Tianjin Sports Bureau to undertake the formation and training of the Tianjin badminton team, rowing team and rugby team, and will represent Tianjin in the 2017 National Games.
The university has continuously strengthened foreign cooperation and exchanges, and has established friendly relations with many well-known foreign universities. The "Sino-US Sports and Cultural Exchange Center" jointly established by the university and the University of Minnesota is the first Sino-US cultural exchange institution jointly established by domestic sports colleges and famous American universities.
In March 2013, the foundation stone of the new campus of the school located in the West District Health Industrial Park of Tuanbo New Town, Jinghai District was started. The new campus covers an area of 1115.7 acres, with a total area of 463,100 square meters and an estimated total investment of 4.7 billion yuan.
After more than 50 years of development, the school has gradually formed the characteristics and advantages of running a school with physical education as the main discipline and the coordinated development of related disciplines, and has built a complete school-running system from undergraduate education to master's and doctoral education, as well as an open school-running pattern covering general higher education, adult education and international student education, and has become a modern sports institution of higher learning with great influence at home and abroad.
