Beijing Sport University, founded in 1953, formerly known as the Central Institute of Physical Education, renamed Beijing Institute of Sport in 1956 and Beijing Sport University in 1993, is a national key institution and a key construction university of the national "211 Project". The school is located in Information Road, Haidian District, covering an area of about 1,100 acres, with a construction area of about 450,000 square meters, and more than 100 indoor and outdoor training venues.
The school has the Faculty of Olympic Sports, the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Faculty of Olympic Sports consists of 8 colleges: Ice and Snow Sports Academy, Football Sports Academy, China Basketball Sports Academy, China Volleyball Sports Academy, China Swimming Sports Academy, China Athletics Academy, Extreme Sports Academy, and Equestrian Sports Academy. The Faculty of Physical Education and Health consists of 7 colleges: the School of Education, the School of Management, the School of Psychology, the School of Martial Arts and Traditional Ethnic Sports, the School of Sports, Leisure and Tourism, the School of Sports Human Sciences, and the School of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences consists of six colleges: the School of Marxism, the School of Journalism and Communication, the School of Arts, the School of International Sports Organization (School of Foreign Chinese), the School of International Culture, and the School of Continuing Education. There are two secondary schools: the Affiliated Competitive Sports School and the Affiliated Secondary Sports Specialized School. The Party School of the General Administration of Sports of the Communist Party of China, the Cadre Training Center of the General Administration of Sports, and the Coach College of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China are located in the school.
At present, the university has 5 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, including the Key Laboratory of Sports and Physical Health of the Ministry of Education and the Key Laboratory of Physical Training and Physical Recovery of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China, 1 Engineering Research Center of Beijing Colleges and Universities, 1 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and 2 Beijing University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. The library has a collection of more than 1.1 million books.
The school is based on undergraduate education and focuses on graduate education. At present, there are 16 undergraduate majors, namely Physical Education, Sports Training, Social Sports Guidance and Management, Sports Human Science, Martial Arts and Traditional Ethnic Sports, Public Utilities Management, Sports Economics and Management, Journalism, Advertising, Applied Psychology, English, Performance, Dance Performance, Sports Rehabilitation, Leisure Physical Education, and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. It has 7 disciplines, including education, management, medicine, art, law, literature, and science. It has the right to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of physical education, and the right to confer master's degrees in the first-level disciplines of psychology, clinical medicine and Marxist theory; It has three professional degrees: Master of Physical Education, Master of Fine Arts and Master of Journalism and Communication, as well as a postdoctoral research station in physical education. The overall level of the school's physical education discipline has ranked first in the three national discipline evaluations organized by the Ministry of Education in the past ten years.
The school has more than 10,000 students at all levels, including more than 9,000 undergraduates and more than 2,400 graduate students. In the past five years, the employment rate of graduates has reached more than 95%, exceeding the average employment rate of colleges and universities in Beijing.
Since its establishment, the school has actively practiced and demonstrated the functions of talent training, scientific research, social service and cultural inheritance, and has cultivated nearly 100,000 outstanding talents in the fields of school sports, competitive sports and sports industry for the country. As of 2015, the university has trained 312 Olympic champions, World Cup and World Championship champions and their coaches, including 73 Olympic champions. In 2015, the "Paralympic Champion Class" was established to recruit outstanding para athletes.

The school has cultivated a large number of outstanding sports experts, scholars, teachers, coaches, athletes and management cadres who are well-known at home and abroad, and has made outstanding contributions to China's sports, higher education, Olympic sports, as well as economic and social development, and has been fully affirmed by the party, the state, all walks of life and the international community. In 2008, the school was awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Collective of Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games" by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council; In 2011, he was awarded the "Sports and Social Responsibility Award" by the International Olympic Committee. The three principals of the school, Zhong Shitong, Ma Qiwei and Jin Jichun, were awarded the "Olympic Movement Silver Medal", "Sports Learning and Research Award" and "Physical Education Award" of the International Olympic Committee respectively.
As one of the key units of Beijing after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Beijing Sport University is an important window to show the world the achievements of New China's sports. In 1955, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai and other party and state leaders watched the matches between the volleyball team of the Central Institute of Physical Education and the Indian national volleyball team, and the Central Institute of Physical Education and the First Mechanical Football United Team and the Soviet team at the Xiannongtan Stadium. Since its establishment, the university has adhered to the direction of internationalization and made significant contributions to China's sports diplomacy. It has trained more than 10,000 international students from 106 countries, among which Dr. Alek Madishin was elected President of the International University Sports Federation in 2015. He has successively conferred doctorates on Zlatko Matesha, former Prime Minister of Croatia and president of the Croatian Olympic Committee, and honorary doctorates on eight international celebrities, including Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee. In 2009, the China Scholarship Council set up a special program to sponsor the "champion class" of graduate students to study abroad, and subsequently, the program was included in the "High-level Consultation Mechanism for China-US People-to-People Exchange". At present, the school has sent more than 60 people.
