Shanghai University of Finance and Economics originated from the business department founded by Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1917, a key construction university of the 211 Project, and a multidisciplinary key university focusing on economic management disciplines

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics originated from the business department founded by Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1917, and Yang Xingfo, a famous social activist and patriotic democrat, served as the director of the business department. In 1921, with the implementation of the plan to build the National Southeast University based on the Nanjing Higher Normal School, the business department was expanded and reorganized and relocated to Shanghai, and the National Southeast University was established to set up Shanghai Business University, which was the earliest business university in the history of Chinese education.

Founded independently in 1932, the university was named National Shanghai Business School, which was the only national business undergraduate university in China at that time. In 1950, the school was renamed Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 1985, the school was renamed Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Education, and is now jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government.

After several generations of hard work and hard work, SUFE has become a multidisciplinary key university with economics and management disciplines as the main discipline and coordinated development of economics, management, law, literature and science. The school covers an area of 826 acres and has three campuses, with the main campus located at No. 777 Guoding Road. As of September 2016, the university has 1,044 full-time teachers, 21,355 students and 14,695 full-time students, including 8,019 undergraduates, 5,914 master's students, 1,130 doctoral students, and 1,615 international students.
