Shanghai Experimental School (Primary School) - Institutional Reviews

In August 2017, the juvenile class of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the list of students to be admitted, and in this list with more than 40 names, there were 3 Shanghai students, 2 of whom were from Shanghai Experimental School. Looking at the past admission list of the junior class of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we can see that the two Shanghai students admitted in 2015 were both from Shanghai Experimental School, and two of the three Shanghai students admitted in 2011 were from Shanghai Experimental School.

Shanghai Experimental School (SIIC) was established in 1986 by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and its predecessor was the "Experimental Class for the Overall Reform of the Primary and Secondary Education System" of the Institute of Educational Sciences of Shanghai Normal University. In 1987, Jiang Zemin, then mayor of Shanghai, personally attended the inauguration ceremony of the school and inscribed the name of the school. SIIC, known as the "Heavenly Bullfrog" concentration camp, is a ten-year school of elementary, junior high and high school, with four years of elementary school, three years of junior high school, and three years of high school.

Among all the public schools in Shanghai, SIIC is the only school that enrolls students in the whole city. The sequence of admission is net screening, computer-based testing, interviewing, and admission, and parents do not need to purchase a school district house. From 2015 to 2017, more than 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 students signed up for SIIC, but only 60 were admitted, with an acceptance rate of nearly 1%. The reason why countless parents are vying to sign up is that the filling in does not account for the volunteer quota, and there is no threshold for online application.

According to the data of previous years, the number of people who passed the screen accounted for about 40% of the number of applicants. The computer-based test does not require literacy, all of which are graphic questions, which are similar to the Mensa IQ test questions according to the arrangement of the figures. There will be 6 mock questions 3 days before the computer-based test so that students can familiarize themselves with the question types and how to answer them. The interviews mainly test students' reading comprehension, hands-on learning, memory and motor skills, including listening to and reading picture books to answer questions, watching videos to learn origami, answering questions after learning mathematics on the spot, group sports in the playground, and memorizing pictures and words on the screen. The computer-based test score accounts for the largest proportion of admission, and it has nothing to do with factors such as the child's kindergarten, parents' education, and the distance between home and school.

If SIIC's enrollment method makes it look like a private school, then the teaching materials and curriculum confirm that it is a "private school within a public school". At the primary school level, SIIC began to use its own Chinese and mathematics textbooks. In the Chinese class, I learn more than 30 new words every day, mainly teaching pinyin; In terms of mathematics, it pays attention to the infiltration of mathematics sub-disciplines and the training of mathematical ideas and methods, with fast progress and advanced content; The English language is taught in Oxford, and the pace of the course is about twice that of other schools. In addition, for students with excellent academic performance, SIIC also sets up personalized class schedules for them, designs self-directed learning modules, and provides some primary and junior bridging courses and international courses. The school also has a wealth of extracurricular activities, with nearly 80 school-based courses for students to choose from, as well as various clubs and social practice activities.

From elementary school to high school graduation, not all SIIC students only need 10 years. It could be 11 years, 12 years, 8 years, 9 years. The school teaches students according to their aptitude and level, and adopts a flexible learning system. SIIC Junior High School plans to enroll 100 students every year, of which the primary school has 50 direct admission places, and nearly 90% of the primary school students can go directly to the primary school. However, if students do not do well in the direct entrance examination, they may need to study for another year in Year 4. In addition, it is rumored that 80% of SIIC's families have one full-time tutoring child's study, and parents should be psychologically prepared.
