Since its establishment, Haitong Primary School has been exploring and innovating the school-running model. Founded in 1998, it is one of the first bilingual experimental schools in Shanghai. In 1999, the school was the first in the district to pilot Oxford English textbooks. In 2000, it became one of the first public schools in the region to introduce foreign teachers.

According to the information released by the school, among its 263 graduates in 2016, a total of 195 were admitted early, including 8 from Huayu Middle School and 6 from Lansheng Fudan. Among the 205 graduates of the class of 2015, 166 were admitted early, and 3 were admitted to Huayu Middle School and Lansheng Fudan respectively. In 2018, only 42 people were on the list of "Honor Roll for Famous Junior High Schools" announced by Haitong Primary School.
As a bilingual school, Haitong Primary School also has excellent results in the Cup. According to the statistics of third-party education information agencies, the number of winners in the four major cups in 2016 accounted for 11.67% of the school, ranking eighth among public primary schools in the city.
To achieve such excellent results is inseparable from the school's blood. Haitong Primary School has previously used spare time to make up classes and training, and parents have reported that the school has extremely strict requirements for their children, such as not being able to leave their seats during the lunch break, only to rest or do homework, and not to go out of the classroom except for going to the toilet, and such a rule began in the first grade. The school has been setting up foreign teacher courses for nearly 20 years since 1999, and is one of the schools in Shanghai that has introduced foreign teachers to teach English listening and speaking earlier, for a longer period of time, and with more significant results.
The school's self-developed CLIL curriculum includes Step into Science, which is bilingual and stimulates students' scientific spirit, teamwork and creativity through a series of hands-on inquiry activities. It was rated as an excellent school-based curriculum by the Education Press of China Normal University. In addition, Haitong Primary School has also used a series of bilingual textbooks, such as "Mathematics Activities", "Our Music Friends", "Natural Common Sense" and so on by Longman Press, which show the characteristics of bilingualism vividly.
In terms of extracurricular activities, the school focuses on expanding students' international horizons through various international exchange and exchange activities, and at the same time, in some bilingual clubs, there are two to three instructors to maintain communication and discussion with students, and at least one of the instructors is a foreign teacher.
