In 1914, Tan Liting, an overseas Chinese businessman, built the "Guangnan Dock" in Nanshi, Guangzhou. On August 1, 1954, Guangzhou Shipyard was established. On June 7, 1993, after restructuring, Guangzhou Guangzhou Shipbuilding International Co., Ltd. was established, and was listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai in the same year, making it the first listed shipbuilding company in China. In 2014, it acquired Guangzhou CSSC Longxue Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. In May 2015, the company changed its name to Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd.

The company's shipbuilding and marine engineering business production base is divided into two major factories: Liwan and Nansha. Liwan plant is located in Baietan, Guangzhou, with two 50,000-ton slipways, one 30,000-ton slipway and one 60,000-ton dock, with a shoreline of about 1,600 meters. The Nansha plant is located on Longxue Island, a state-level free trade zone, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau. The factory covers an area of 2.53 million square meters, equipped with 2 shipbuilding dry docks of more than 300,000 tons, 4 600-ton gantry cranes, 5 ultra-large ship berths, and plans to add 1 900-ton gantry crane and 2 50,000-ton shipbuilding platforms.
