Tongji University's economics and management education began in 1956 and is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China to offer such professional education. The School of Economics and Management was established in 1984 and merged with the School of Business in 1998 to form the School of Economics and Management. At present, the college brings together the main disciplines of economics and management of Tongji University, and has the Department of Management Science and Engineering, the Department of Construction Management and Real Estate, the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Accounting, the Department of Economics and Finance and the Department of Public Administration, and has corresponding research institutes and laboratories in the secondary disciplines.
After more than 60 years of development, the school has gradually formed the purpose of "innovation, education and service" and the goal of "internationalization and research".
There are 329 faculty members in the college, including 64 professors and 77 associate professors. It has 9 undergraduate majors, 14 master's programs, 3 first-level discipline doctoral programs, and 2 postdoctoral mobile stations. At present, there are more than 1,500 undergraduates, more than 4,000 master's students (including MBA, EMBA, MPA, ME, MEM, MF, MPAcc professional degree students) and doctoral students (including DBA). Over the past 30 years since its establishment, the School of Economics and Management has cultivated tens of thousands of professional management talents and played an important role in the country's economic construction.
Scientific research is an important part of the development of the Academy. Proceeding from the actual needs of discipline construction and economic construction, the college closely combines teaching and scientific research, actively undertakes research projects of the state, relevant ministries and commissions and enterprises, and also carries out international cooperation projects with scientific research institutions and universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland and other countries, and the overall level of scientific research ranks among the top domestic economic and management colleges.
International cooperation and exchange is one of the important features and advantages of the college. The school has cooperated with the European Business School in Paris and the Essex Business School in France, the MBA double degree program with the University of Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom, the MBA and Master of Finance programs with Case Western Reserve University in the United States, the SIMBA program with the National Pont Road University in France, the EMBA double degree program with the University of Mannheim in Germany, and the MBA triple degree program with XLRI in India and Case Western Reserve in the United States. At present, the school has established cooperative relations with more than 70 world-renowned universities in 15 countries and regions, and has established extensive international exchanges in the fields of faculty exchanges, scientific research cooperation, and student exchanges.
On the basis of the development of disciplines, the college has vigorously expanded the path of internationalization and achieved good results. At present, the college has become a full member of AACSB, EFMD, AMBA and PRME, and has obtained international authoritative certifications such as AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA, CAMEA, PMI-GAC, etc. In 2012, the discipline of Management Science and Engineering of the School ranked among the top 10 in the National University Discipline Evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and the School of Management was rated A in the Wushulian University Ranking, and the MBA ranked ninth in the Forbes Best Business Schools in China. In 2014, it ranked seventh in China among the 1,000 best business schools in the world published by Eduniversal, an authoritative ranking agency in Europe. In 2016, the MMS program was ranked 50th in the world by the Financial Times.
In the future development, the School of Economics and Management of Tongji University will be based in China and facing the world, and continue to build an internationally renowned school of economics and management with Chinese characteristics.
