Founded in 1984, the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as "Tsinghua School of Economics and Management") has maintained a leading level in China in terms of talent training, scientific research, social influence, and international exchanges, with the mission of "creating knowledge, cultivating leaders, contributing to China, and influencing the world".
The origins of Tsinghua School of Economics and Management can be traced back to the Department of Economics, which was established in 1926, with Zhu Binyuan as the head of the department. From 1928, Chen Daisun served as the head of the Department of Economics until 1952, when the department was reorganized and the Department of Economics was merged into other institutions. In 1979, in order to meet the needs of reform and opening up, Tsinghua University established the Department of Economic Management Engineering, with Dong Xinbao and Fu Jiaji serving as the principal and deputy deans. In 1984, Tsinghua School of Economics and Management was formally established, with Zhu Rongji as the first dean (term: 1984-2001), Zhao Chunjun as the second dean (term: 2001-2005), He Jiankun as the third dean (term: 2005-2006), and the current dean of the school is Qian Yingyi (term: 2006-).
Tsinghua School of Economics and Management has 7 departments: Department of Accounting, Department of Economics, Department of Finance, Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, Department of Leadership and Organizational Management, Department of Management Science and Engineering, and Department of Marketing, covering four first-level disciplines of Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Theoretical Economics, and Applied Economics. The Secretariat of the National Steering Committee for Graduate Education in Business Administration is located at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management.
From 2007 to 2008, Tsinghua School of Economics and Management was accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for management education, AACSB for accounting education, and EQUIS for the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), becoming the first business school in Chinese mainland to obtain AACSB and EQUIS, two top global accreditations for management education.
Tsinghua School of Economics and Management has more than 4,000 students, studying in undergraduate, doctoral, master's, MBA, EMBA and other degree programs. In addition, there are more than 1,600 undergraduate students from other departments of Tsinghua University who are pursuing a second degree in economics and management at the School of Management and Economics. The college also has a postdoctoral mobile station.
Tsinghua School of Economics and Management has signed student exchange agreements with more than 100 well-known overseas colleges and universities, providing various students with the opportunity to exchange overseas colleges every year.
In April 2013, Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, together with 14 departments of Tsinghua University, established "Tsinghua X-Lab" (Tsinghua X-Space), which has become an educational platform for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship at Tsinghua University.
The Advisory Committee of the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University, established in October 2000, is composed of chairmen, presidents or CEOs of well-known international and domestic enterprises, deans of world-renowned business schools, and leaders of China's government and financial departments. Zhu Rongji, the first dean of the college, served as the honorary chairman of the advisory committee. Henry M. Paulson, then CEO of Goldman Sachs, was the first Chairman of the Advisory Board (2000-2002), Lord Browne of Madingley, then CEO of BP Group, was the second Chairman of the Board (2003-2007), and H. Scott Lee, then CEO of Wal-Mart. Lee Scott is the third Chairman (2007-2009), John L. Thornton, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., is the fourth Chairman (2009-2013), and David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Carlyle Group, is the fifth Chairman (2013-2016), Breyer Mr. Jim Breyer, Founder and CEO of Capital, is the current Chairman. Since its establishment, the Advisory Committee has actively contributed to the development of Tsinghua School of Economics and Management into a world-class school of economics and management. The committee has made significant contributions to the development of the College by proposing strategic planning for the development of the College, helping the College to establish extensive international partnerships, and helping the College to establish a number of research institutes.
