Jilin Academy of Arts was founded in 1946 as the Lu Xun College of Literature and Art of Northeastern University. In 1948, the Department of Music was established at Northeastern University, which was later renamed Northeast Normal University, and the Department of Music was changed to the Department of Music. In 1958, on the basis of the Music Department of Northeast Normal University, Jilin Art College was established. Since then, five art academies with their own characteristics, including Jilin Provincial Cultural Cadre School, Jilin Provincial Art School, Jilin Provincial Song and Dance Theater Affiliated Music and Dance School, Jilin Art School, and Changchun Film Academy affiliated to Changchun Film Studio, have been merged one after another, forming a comprehensive school-running pattern for cultivating a variety of artistic talents. In 1978, it was upgraded to a university and renamed Jilin University of Arts. In 2000, Jilin Provincial Opera School was merged into Jilin Academy of Arts. The college is located in the unique downtown area of Changchun City, with four campuses of performance, modeling, comprehensive and urban art, and 13 undergraduate teaching units, including the School of Music, the School of Fine Arts, the School of Design, the School of Drama, Film and Television, the School of Dance, the School of New Media, the School of Animation, the School of Art Education, the School of Arts Management, the School of Popular Music, the School of Chinese Opera and the School of Urban Art. It has 8,178 full-time students, including 7,295 undergraduates, 53 junior college students, and 830 master's students. The school-running function of the college as "the cradle of cultivating talents, the base for inheriting culture, the source of artistic innovation, and the window for guiding aesthetics" has become increasingly prominent.
