Nanjing University of the Arts is the only comprehensive art school in Jiangsu Province, and it is also the earliest independent art institution in China and continues to this day. Its predecessor was the Shanghai Academy of Graphic Arts, which was founded by Mr. Liu Haisu, the founder of Chinese art education in 1912, and was renamed Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1930. In 1922, Mr. Yan Wenliang founded the Suzhou Academy of Fine Arts in Suzhou. In 1952, these two earliest private art schools in China merged with the art and music departments of the Art Department of Shandong University to form the East China Art College, located in Sheqiao, Wuxi, Jiangsu. The merger was completed on December 8, and since then, this day has become the anniversary of Nanjing University of the Arts. In 1958, the East China Art School moved to Nanjing, located in Dingjiaqiao. In June of the same year, it was renamed Nanjing Art College. In 1959, it was named Nanjing University of the Arts, and the academic system was changed to four years, thus completing the undergraduate system of the school. In 1967, it was relocated to No. 15, Huju North Road, Nanjing.
