Business education at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics began in 1917 when Nanjing Higher Normal School was founded as a business department, with Yang Xingfo, a famous social activist and patriotic democrat, as the director of the business department. Later, the Department of Commerce moved to Shanghai, and in 1921, Shanghai University of Commerce was established, becoming the earliest business university in the history of Chinese education. Sun Zheng is currently the dean, professor and doctoral supervisor of the Business School of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

With a history of nearly 100 years, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics is a multidisciplinary key university with economic management disciplines as the main discipline and coordinated development of economics, management, law, literature and science, and is also one of the important bases for the cultivation of senior management talents in China. Among the financial colleges and universities in China, our university was the first to obtain the right to confer doctoral degrees, and it is also one of the first universities to set up a social science (economics) postdoctoral mobile station. In 1996, the school entered the ranks of key construction universities of the national "211 Project"; In 2007, the university entered the ranks of the national high-level university construction project.

At present, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has three national key disciplines: accounting, public finance, and history of economic thought, and finance is a national key (cultivation) discipline. It has 4 key disciplines of the Ministry of Finance and 6 key disciplines of Shanghai; It has three national bases: the National Basic Talent Training Base for Economics, the National Cultural Quality Education Base for College Students, and the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education - Institute of Accounting and Finance. It also has 4 first-level discipline doctoral degree programs in theoretical economics, applied economics, business administration, and management science and engineering, 44 second-level discipline doctoral degree programs, and 4 postdoctoral mobile stations in philosophy, theoretical economics, applied economics, and business administration. Among them, there are 24 degree authorization points, 9 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 74 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 36 undergraduate majors approved in the national discipline catalog.
