Founded in 1953, it is a well-known institution of higher art in South China and a provincial university in Guangdong Province, and its painting, industrial design and sculpture are national characteristic majors determined by the Ministry of Education

Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts is the only higher art institution in South China. The predecessor of the school was the Central South Academy of Fine Arts, which was founded in Wuhan, Hubei Province in 1953 with the approval of the Ministry of Higher Education. In 1958, Zhongnan Academy of Fine Arts moved south from Wuhan to Guangzhou and was renamed Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 2004, the school built a new campus in Guangzhou University Town, forming a pattern of "one school, two districts". The school is now a provincial university in Guangdong Province.

In 1981, he was granted the right to confer the first batch of master's degrees in China.

In 1987, it began to recruit foreign students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

In 2005, it was approved as one of the first batch of pilot units for the training of Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in China.

In 2010, it was identified as a provincial doctoral program construction unit by Guangdong Province.

The school has 8 colleges, including the School of Chinese Painting, the School of Plastic Arts, the School of Architecture and Art Design, the School of Industrial Design, the School of Visual Art and Design, the School of Art Education, the College of Arts and Humanities, and the City College, as well as 1 teaching department of ideological and political theory. The undergraduate education consists of 29 majors, including Fine Arts, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Art Design, Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, Product Design, Fashion and Apparel Design, Arts and Crafts, Digital Media Arts, Art and Technology, Drama, Film and Television Literature, Radio and Television Choreography, Drama, Film and Television Director, Drama, Film and Television Art Design, Broadcasting and Hosting Art, Animation, Film and Television Photography and Production, Art Education, Cultural Relics and Museology, Industrial Design, Fashion Design and Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Public Art. 55 specializations. Graduate education has three first-level discipline master's programs in fine arts, design, and art theory, and three professional degree authorization programs in art, landscape architecture, and cultural relics and museums.

At present, the school has 3 provincial-level key disciplines, including 2 first-level disciplines of "Fine Arts" and "Design" and 1 second-level discipline of "Arts and Crafts", and 3 provincial-level key disciplines, including 1 first-level discipline of "Art Theory" and 2 second-level disciplines of "Art Theory and Criticism" and "Film and Television and Digital Media". "Painting", "Industrial Design" and "Sculpture" are the national characteristic majors determined by the Ministry of Education, and "Industrial Design" is the first batch of pilot projects for the comprehensive reform of undergraduate majors in local colleges and universities determined by the Ministry of Education. The "Industrial Design Professional Collaborative Education Platform" was approved as the first batch of collaborative education platforms in Guangdong Province; Four majors, including "Fine Arts", are provincial-level characteristic majors, and eight majors, including "Sculpture", "Visual Communication Design", "Environmental Design", "Product Design", "Art and Technology", "Digital Media Arts", "Animation" and "Architecture", are listed as provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot construction projects. Five courses, including watercolor painting, sculpture creation, creation (oil painting), and design foundation - creative expression, and advertising creativity, were rated as "Eleventh Five-Year" provincial quality courses, and two courses, including "Social Responsibility of Advertising Creativity" and "Chinese Gongbi Figure Painting Sketching Classroom", were approved for the construction of "Twelfth Five-Year" provincial high-quality video open courses, and 10 courses such as "Spatial Design Form Foundation" were listed as the "Twelfth Five-Year" provincial high-quality resource sharing course construction scope. At present, the university has 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 7 experimental teaching demonstration centers of colleges and universities in Guangdong Province, 7 demonstration bases for joint training of graduate students in Guangdong Province, 29 shared laboratories in the school, and 44 off-campus practice bases, which provide good conditions for the practical teaching of the school.  

The school is the former president unit of the "Guangdong Provincial University Art and Design Education Professional Committee", the director unit of the "Guangdong Provincial Higher Education Industrial Design Teaching Steering Committee", the Guangdong Provincial School Art Education Activity (Art) Training Base and the Guangdong Provincial Art and Design Education and Training Center.  

The school has two campuses in Changgang and University Town, with a total area of 564 acres and a total construction area of 362,500 square meters. The school library has a large collection of rare art books, periodicals and imitation prints, rubbings and thread-bound rare books. At present, the school has a collection of about 490,000 books, 260,000 electronic books and 30 databases. The school has 3 art galleries with a total length of about 2,000 meters and 1 sculpture exhibition hall with an area of 1,050 square meters. The school has a collection of more than 10,000 pieces of art treasures and modern and contemporary masterpieces from various dynasties since the Tang Dynasty.

The school has a strong faculty. Hu Yichuan, Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, Wang Zhaomin, Gao Yongjian, Chi Ke, Chen Shaofeng, Pan He, Yang Zhiguang, Guo Shaogang, Chen Jinzhang, Liang Mingcheng, Yin Dingbang, Wang Shouzhi, Zhang Zhi'an, Li Ming, Zhao Jian, Fang Chuxiong, Guo Runwen and a number of other masters in the history of contemporary Chinese art have been teaching at the school for a long time. At present, there are 64 professors and 151 associate professors. Among the teachers, there are a number of outstanding talents such as experts enjoying special government allowances of the State Council, members of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council, members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, directors and deputy directors of the Art Committee of the China Artists Association, and directors of various art and design professional societies in China.

At present, the school has 9,460 students, including 5,435 full-time undergraduates, 661 full-time graduate students, 159 on-the-job master's degree students, 2,380 adult higher education students, and 825 self-examination students. The school takes talent training as its fundamental task, cultivates people with virtue, and pays attention to cultivating high-level artistic and cultural creative talents with a sense of social responsibility, innovative spirit and practical ability. In recent years, the school's students have achieved excellent results in various important competitions and activities, such as the National Art Exhibition, the internationally renowned Red Dot Award, and the iF Design Award.

The school attaches great importance to scientific research and creation. The school actively selects outstanding teachers and students to study, study, exchange or engage in academic research abroad; Introduce high-level art and design exhibitions, hold high-level international academic seminars, and create conditions to display the school's academic achievements and excellent works of teachers and students on the international stage.
