Founded in 1959, Yunnan University of the Arts is a comprehensive higher art college with distinctive characteristics and complete art categories in southwest China, and is a master's degree-granting institution approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The school is located in the southwest of Yuhua District, Wujiaying Township, Chenggong County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, on the east side of Kunyu Expressway, close to Laoyu River and Guanshan Mountain on the south side, covering an area of 800 acres and planning to run a school with a planned school scale of about 12,800 students. As of September 2014, there are 10,210 undergraduate students and 579 graduate students. There are 694 full-time faculty members, 21 doctors, and 321 masters, of which 42% of the full-time teachers have the title of associate professor (or above).

Since its establishment, Yunnan Academy of Arts has brought together a large number of famous artists and cultivated a large number of artistic talents for the society. At the same time, it has also cultivated a group of artistic talents unique to Yunnan ethnic minorities, including Dai, Hani, Naxi, Lisu, Lahu, Wa, Jingpo, Brown, Pumi, Achang, Nu, Jino, De'ang, Dulong, etc. It has made important contributions to the prosperity and development of Yunnan's cultural and artistic undertakings and the construction of a strong ethnic and cultural province in Yunnan. Professor Liao Xinxue, an oil painter and sculptor who returned from studying in France, Professor Li Dan, a violinist, Professor Fang Yu and his wife (translators of "Les Miserables"), Professor Yuan Xiaocen, a well-known Chinese painter and sculptor, Ding Shaoguang and Jiang Tiefeng, representatives of the Yunnan School of painting, and other experts and scholars have taught here.

Yunnan University of the Arts has a complete set of majors, and the existing 34 undergraduate majors cover all majors in art in the "Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Colleges and Universities" promulgated by the Ministry of Education, involving arts, literature, management and engineering. The training levels are diverse, with full-time master's education, MFA professional degree graduate education, in-service master's education for college teachers, full-time general undergraduate education, international student education, higher vocational and technical education, correspondence education, post-secondary education and other levels, and are open to students from all over the country and the world.

Yunnan University of the Arts has a wide and unique influence in the fields of professional creation and research in printmaking, oil painting, folk drama, music composition and performance, dance choreography and performance. At present, there are 10 teaching units: School of Music, School of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design, School of Drama, School of Dance, School of Film and Television, School of Art and Culture, School of Continuing Education and Higher Art Vocational Education, Wenhua College (independent college, co-founded with enterprises) and affiliated art schools (secondary vocational schools); There are six first-level discipline master's degree programs in art theory, music and dance, drama and film and television, fine arts, design, and ethnology; There are 8 fields of music, drama, opera, film, radio and television, dance, fine arts, and art design, as well as the right to confer professional degrees in the field of industrial design. In 2006, the Propaganda Department of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee listed the Yunnan Art Institute as the professional training base for the Yunnan contestants of the National CCTV TV Singer Competition; In 2008, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Government, Yunnan University of the Arts became an international talent training base for ethnic art in Yunnan Province. In 2008, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, Yunnan University of the Arts became the art teacher training base in Yunnan Province; In 2009, with the approval of the Propaganda Department of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, Yunnan University of the Arts established the Yunnan Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Base; In 2011, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, Yunnan University of the Arts established the Yunnan Provincial University Ethnic Culture Digital Media and Animation Creative Design Engineering Research Center. In 2012, with the approval of the Propaganda Department of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee and the Yunnan Provincial Federation of Social Sciences, Yunnan University of the Arts established a research and innovation team for the development of Yunnan drama. In 2013, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, Yunnan University of the Arts established the Collaborative Innovation Center for the Inheritance of National Art Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Since 1996, it has been approved to recruit foreign students; In 1998, he set up a studio in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, which built a platform for artists to go global. In 2008, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Government, it became an international talent training base for ethnic art in Yunnan Province; In 2009, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Government, it became a government scholarship institution in Yunnan Province to recruit international students from neighboring countries; In 2013, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it became a college in Yunnan Province that recruits students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Yunnan University of the Arts has established long-term and stable cooperation and exchange relations with universities in the United States, Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy and other European and American countries, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and other Asian countries, as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan and other regions, and has carried out exchanges and cooperation at different professional and academic levels.
