The China Conservatory of Music was established in 1964. Based on Chinese culture and with unique characteristics of Chinese music education and research, the school is a higher music institution that cultivates high-level professionals in Chinese music theory research, creation, performance and education. Guided by the school-running philosophy of "inheriting the country's learning, promoting the country's rhyme, educating the country's instruments, and strengthening the country's music", it advocates and builds the "Chinese music school", and is known as the "cradle of Chinese musicians" and "the palace of Chinese music".
The university has the right to confer doctorates, masters, bachelor's degrees and masters of fine arts (MFA) in music and dance, and has established a postdoctoral mobile station in "music and dance", which is a "university for international students who accept Chinese government scholarships to study in China". The majors are divided into three categories: musicology, composition and composition technology theory, and music performance, with 11 teaching units, including the Department of Musicology, the Department of Composition, the Department of Vocal Opera, the Department of Chinese Folk Instrumental Music, the Department of Music Education, the Department of Piano, the Department of Arts Management, the Department of Conducting, the Department of Orchestra, the Department of Music Science and Technology, and the Department of Social Sciences.
