Since its establishment in 1960, the School of Design of Jiangnan University has gathered a large number of influential academic leaders in industrial design and art design at home and abroad, including young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country, outstanding talents in the new century, famous teachers in Jiangsu Province and training objects of the "333 Project" in Jiangsu Province, as well as a large number of backbone teachers with rich experience in art and design junior high school and teaching. In the past ten years, he has undertaken and completed a number of national, provincial and ministerial important scientific research projects, including the National Art Research Project, the National Education Science Research Project, the National Social Science Research Project, the New Century Talent Funding Project of the Ministry of Education, the Social Science Research Project of the Ministry of Education, the "863" Program Sub-project, the Jiangsu Provincial Social Science Foundation Research Project, etc., and has won more than 400 important international and domestic awards.

The School of Design of Jiangnan University has frequent foreign exchanges. It has maintained long-term contact and cooperation with internationally renowned design schools and design enterprises in Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands and other countries in teaching and research, and has the basic characteristics of today's international advanced disciplines. Graduates of the college have a solid foundation, strong hands-on ability, comprehensive knowledge and innovative spirit, and are well received by employers, Haier, Midea, TCL, Huawei, Konka, Shanghai Modern Design Group and other famous enterprises have many people in the position, Tsinghua University, Dongda University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji, Hunan University and other national key universities, as well as the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China Academy of Art, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Nanjing University of the Arts and other famous art colleges and universities have more people to teach.

After long-term practice and accumulation, the School of Design of Jiangnan University has formed an excellent academic tradition and a pragmatic style of study, focusing on the combination of art and science, tracking the international frontier trends of design disciplines, paying attention to interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teaching research and practice, and constructing a teaching and research-oriented design education system with distinctive characteristics of "intersection and integration", forming a distinctive "big design" teaching and research pattern with "industrial design" as the core and multiple related design professional fields as the support. It has cultivated a large number of outstanding design talents and technical and academic backbones, and has made important contributions to the country's economic and cultural construction.

At present, the college covers five undergraduate majors and seven major directions, namely industrial design, art design (including environmental art design, visual communication design, public art design and other professional directions), architecture, advertising and fine arts. The college has a complete talent training system, with a doctoral degree training program in product system design and theory, and the right to confer master's degrees in two disciplines of design art and fine arts, as well as a master's degree in "industrial design" engineering. The discipline of design art is a key construction discipline in the first, second and third phases of the national "211 Project". The industrial design major is a characteristic major of national colleges and universities, and the art design major is the first batch of brand majors and characteristic majors in Jiangsu Province.
