The founder of Hyatt was Jay Pritzker, and the first hotel was the Hyatt Regency Inn, which he purchased in 1957 near Los Angeles International Airport. Over the next decade, Jay Pritzker, his brother Donald Pritzker, and other Pritzker family business interests grew the company into a privately held management and hospitality company in North America, and in 1962 it became a publicly traded company. In 1968, Hyatt International was founded and later developed into an independent, publicly traded company. Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Hyatt Hotels International were privately owned by the Pritzker family business interests in 1979 and 1982, respectively. On December 31, 2004, all hotel assets owned by the Pritzker family business interests, including Hyatt and Hyatt International, were integrated into Hyatt Hotels Corporation.
The group grew rapidly in the 60s, and in 1969, there were 13 Hyatt hotels in the United States, and in the same year it opened its first overseas hotel, the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong. There are currently 213 Hyatt hotels and resorts in 43 countries with more than 90,000 rooms, and 29 Hyatt hotels are under construction, including 10 in China.
Hyatt has three distinctive brands: Hyatt Regency, Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt, all of which are five-star. Among them, the Hyatt has the lowest grade, which is an ordinary 5-star.
