The company was founded by J. J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott were created in 1927. Their son, J.W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr., grew up working in the family business and spent more than 50 years building it into the world's leading hospitality company. The founders of this luxury hotel group originally wanted to open only one hotel in Washington, D.C. More than 80 years later, no matter where you go or what you need, from leisure vacations to business and meetings to weddings, Marriott hotels can meet them all. Along the way, Marriott has served generations of travelers, paving the way for innovation in the hospitality industry.

On November 16, 2015, Marriott International, an American hotel giant, announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts for $12.2 billion, which owns brands such as W Hotels, St. Regis and Sheraton, and Marriott will become the hotel group with the largest number of rooms in the world.

In August 2017, Alibaba Group announced that it had reached a comprehensive strategic cooperation with Marriott International, and the two parties will establish a joint venture company, which will fully operate all Marriott's online Chinese official platforms, including Marriott's Chinese official website, Marriott's wireless Chinese app, Fliggy Marriott's official flagship store, etc. At the same time, Marriott's "Marriott Rewards Program", The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Program, and Starwood Preferred Customer Program (SPG) will be fully interoperable with Alibaba's "88 Member" system, and Alibaba "88 Members" with naughty values greater than 2,500 or 1,000 respectively can directly apply to become Marriott Gold or Silver members.

In addition, the joint venture will take the lead in the in-depth development of the world's top tourist destinations, focusing on Marriott's hotels, integrating surrounding tourism resources, and designing and launching personalized travel packages.
