Gaojia Folk Courtyard is located at No. 144 North Courtyard Gate, hidden in Huifang Xiyangshi Lane, with a total living area of 2,310 square meters, is a brick and wood structure of the courtyard. The small area, exquisite decoration, cold and dilapidated environment make the Gao family compound a suitable filming location for late Qing and Republic of China dramas. In the 80s, the compound began to appear in many film and television dramas, such as "The Red Lantern Hangs High", "Xi'an Incident", "Liao Zhai" and so on. The compound began to be built in the Chongzhen period at the end of the Ming Dynasty, and it had begun to take shape by the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The main body of the compound was completed in the Qianlong period and completed as a whole in the Daoguang period. In 1985, the Academy of Painting and Calligraphy settled in the institute and renovated several places in the courtyard. Today, the Gao family compound has become a relatively well-preserved residential building in Xi'an.
The Gao family courtyard mainly displays the architectural art, home furnishing, brick carving art and traditional residential couplets of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The most unmissable programs in the courtyard are Shaanxi shadow puppet shows, puppet shows, and Han and Tang Dynasty songs and dances. Shadow puppetry, Qin dialect, puppet show every half an hour to perform, in the outdoor stage to see the Qin dialect, then wait ten minutes to go to the indoor teahouse to watch the shadow puppet show, the time is very tight. A ticket for more than ten yuan can watch an authentic Qin dialect or shadow puppet show, and the price is affordable. The only regret is that the program time is too short, each program is only ten minutes, suitable for tourists who want to taste and understand Shaanxi cultural performances.
There is a Ming and Qing Dynasty clothing museum in the courtyard, which is dedicated to displaying cheongsams and fans after the late Qing Dynasty. Although it is called a museum, it is no different from a small exhibition. The content is empty and does not match the 10 yuan fare. From the outside of the courtyard, the signboard of the Gao family compound is too inconspicuous and easy to miss, but it is actually at the entrance of Xiyang Market. Tourists who plan to go should pay attention to the entrance of Xiyang Market to avoid making mistakes.
