During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Chongqing, as the accompanying capital, left a large number of representative cultural relics of the War of Resistance against Japan. The Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Site Museum is an important site that has to be mentioned.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Huang Yunjie, a comprador merchant of Chongqing Baili & Co. (comprador refers to a Chinese merchant who helped the West in bilateral trade with China in modern history), built a villa called "Huangjia Garden" on Nanshan, which was named "Huangshan". After the Nationalist Government moved the capital to Chongqing, Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Meiling bought this hilltop villa as a wartime residence in order to escape the bombing of the Japanese army. At first, there were only buildings such as Yunxiu Tower and Song Hall here, but later a number of barracks and the residence of the staff of the chairman's chamber were built within a radius of 100 miles, which were heavily guarded, and it was also an important place for the military, political and diplomatic center of the national government. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Nationalist Government returned the capital to Nanjing, and handed over the place to the China Welfare Institute, which was officially opened to the public in 2005 under the name of the Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Site Museum.
Today, the Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Site Museum covers an area of more than 500 acres, and the display area of cultural relics reaches more than 4,000 square meters, which is the largest and most well-preserved anti-Japanese war site in southwest China. The most worth viewing are 15 cultural relics and architectural sites, including Yunxiu Tower, Song Hall, Confucius Garden, Grass Pavilion, Lianqing Building, Yunfeng Tower, Songlai Pavilion, Huangshan Primary School, Zhou Zhirou's former residence, Wangjiang Pavilion viewpoint, air-raid shelter, Fortress Mountain, power generation room, attendant room, guard room, most of which restore the style of the Republic of China period.
Yunxiu Tower
Standing on the main peak of Huangshan Mountain, Yunxiu Tower is the office and residence of Chiang Kai-shek at that time, it is a three-storey small western-style house, with an internal living area of about 360 square meters. Chiang Kai-shek arrived in Chongqing and stayed here, and the villa began its own legendary history. In Yunxiu Tower, Chiang Kai-shek held many military and political meetings, and it can be said that almost all the important decisions of the Nationalist Government at that time were brewed here. At present, Yunxiu Tower has basically restored the style of the year, such as bedrooms, conference rooms, and offices, and there are replicas and even originals, and visitors can directly feel the wartime atmosphere here. In addition, there is an exhibition in the building focusing on Chiang Kai-shek's activities in the capital during the war, showing a more flesh-and-blood Chiang Kai-shek in the form of historical pictures, which is worth stopping and watching for tourists.
Yunxiu Tower, located in the dense forest, is surrounded by steep cliffs, and only the front and rear stone stairs are connected. There is a sentry on the top of the building, an air-raid shelter downstairs, and Chiang Kai-shek's bedroom in the right corner of the second floor. The bedrooms are spacious and bright with large glass windows on three sides, making them highly prepared against air raids and assassin attacks. Tourists can overlook the peaks from afar, and they can also watch the bustling pedestrians up and down the mountain.
On the wall of Chiang Kai-shek's office hangs a replica of his own inscription, "Perseverance." Some people think that it should be "arduous and extraordinary", but in fact this is deliberately done by Chiang Kai-shek. In 1943, Chiang Kai-shek landed in the Diaoyu City of Hechuan, Chongqing, and in this ancient battlefield that the Mongolian army could not attack for a long time, he realized the meaning of "perseverance".
Pine Hall
The pine hall is a bungalow structure, surrounded by pine and cypress, very hidden, it is the residence of Chiang Kai-shek and Song Meiling, but because only Mrs. Chiang lived at that time, the pine hall is also called Song Meiling's villa. Song Meiling once invited the eldest sister Song Ailing and the second sister Song Qingling to come to Huangshan to cool off, Chiang Kai-shek saw the three sisters playing cards in the corridor at leisure, and watched the surrounding pine forests hugging, thick shade and covering the sun, so he named this building "Pine Hall". The name is also wonderful in the homonym of "Song" and "Song", which is impressive, and the allusion has spread quickly. Later, the word "Song Hall" inscribed by Chiang Kai-shek was made into a plaque in black and white characters and hung at the front door. The plaque of "Pine Hall" on the door is a replica, and the original product is displayed in the room and is listed as a museum collection.
The indoor living room is furnished with rattan chairs, which, although old, look elegant with lace sofa towels and wool rugs. The bedroom bed is more delicate than that of Yunxiu Tower, and the carved wooden mirror and dressing table are very exquisite. An old British typewriter sits in the office, and the cracked leather sofa next to it is eye-catching. The most popular exhibition hall displays pictures and written materials of Soong Meiling's diplomatic activities and the Soong family in Chongqing. A small screen in the middle of the hall constantly plays the picture of Soong Meiling speaking in the U.S. Congress, so that visitors have a more comprehensive understanding of this influential figure.
Yunfeng Tower:
Yunfeng Tower is the residence specially prepared by Chiang Kai-shek for Soong Ching Ling, also known as the "Mother of the Nation Building", which is a typical combination of Chinese and Western style. Yunfeng Building has two floors, restoring the living room and office in the style of the 40s of the last century, in addition to exhibiting photos of Soong Ching Ling's activities in Chongqing, the inscription of "War of Resistance to the End", and photocopies of speeches at the Far East Anti-War Conference. However, during Song Qingling's two stays in Chongqing, he did not live here, even if he visited Huangshan, he would take a car directly back to his residence in the city on the same day, which is now No. 5 Xincun at the intersection of Lianglukou - Song Qingling's former residence, and interested tourists can go to visit.
Wangjiang Pavilion:
Wangjiang Pavilion was built in the 30s of the last century, is the only landscape building in the ruins group, can have a panoramic view of the Yangtze River, Jialing River two rivers scenic spots. Chiang Kai-shek often watched the mountains and scenery here, and once witnessed the tragic situation of Chongqing after the bombing with Claire Lee Chennault, an American flight instructor with his air force adviser, and later contributed to the formation of the "Flying Tigers".
Since the Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Site Museum is located in the depths of Nanshan, the traffic is slightly inconvenient, so it is recommended that tourists from other places take a taxi or drive by themselves. There is a museum visit route reminder board at the entrance of the scenic spot, and tourists had better plan their itinerary before visiting, otherwise the rugged mountain road in the scenic spot will add a lot of exercise to themselves.
