Chaotianmen-Institutional Reviews

Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, Chaotianmen has always been the façade of Chongqing's external display. After the Southern Song Dynasty established the capital of Lin'an (Hangzhou), because the envoy needed to reach Chaotianmen through the Yangtze River to pass the holy decree, it was named because it often received the holy decree of the Son of Heaven. Chaotianmen was not only selected as one of the "Top Ten Cultural Symbols of Chongqing" by the Chongqing Cultural Symbols Research Group, but also the "zero kilometer" point sign of Chongqing Highway (the symbol of the central point of the city) is also located here.

At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Chongqing guard Dai Ding expanded the mountain city and built 17 city gates according to the nine palace gossip, the largest of which is Chaotianmen, like the door god of the Yuzhong Peninsula, protecting the safety of Chongqing City. However, in the wars that Chongqing has experienced in history, Chaotianmen has almost never been at the center of the confrontation of the war. Because of the principle of "bullying the mountains and not the water, and not condescending", Chaotianmen is not only easy to defend and difficult to attack, even if it is captured, Chaotianmen located in the lowlands still cannot bring offensive advantages to the besiegers, so most of the wars in history take place in the first half of the city's Qianguo Gate, Tongyuan Gate, etc., Chaotianmen is more of a deterrent gate in Chongqing City in military affairs.

Until 1927, Chongqing demolished many old buildings such as the ancient city wall and gatehouse due to the need to expand the scale of the city, and the Chaotianmen City Gate disappeared. The main body of Chaotianmen today is a square, and Jiang Zemin once inscribed "Chongqing Chaotianmen Square" for it.

In front of Chaotian Gate, the turquoise Jialing River water and the brown and yellow Yangtze River water "collide", the turbidity is distinct, forming a very spectacular "Jiama Water" landscape. Standing on Chaotianmen Square, you can watch all kinds of cruise ships compete for the current and the beautiful scenery of Nanbin Road on the other side. As for the "Hugui Stone", which has a beautiful legend, it was blasted by the waterway dredging department as early as 2008; Chaotianmen "Lingshi" originally appeared occasionally when the river dried up, because after the Three Gorges Project was completed, the water level of the river rose, and the "Lingshi" also sank to the bottom of the river forever.

Although Chaotianmen has gradually faded away from the memory of Chongqing in the past, it still has a high value to visit as a city landmark. Looking at the confluence of the two rivers, the changes of the ancient and modern Sishan City, I believe that tourists will have a different understanding.
