Chongqing People's Liberation Monument - Institutional Reviews

As expressed in the standard tour guide words "3,000 years of Jiangzhou City, 800 years of Chongqing Mansion, 100 years of Liberation Monument", the Chongqing People's Liberation Monument is definitely one of the cultural symbols of Chongqing. Nowadays, the Jiefangbei business district where Jiefangbei is located is also the most prosperous area in Chongqing.

During the Anti-Japanese War, the Nationalist Government moved its capital to Chongqing, and built a "spiritual fortress" with a height of 7 zhang and 7 feet (calculated according to the municipal unit) in the most prosperous commercial center in the urban area, which means "July 7 Anti-Japanese War". The fort holds a daily ceremony to raise and lower the flag, and a large porcelain tank is set up on the top to store cotton slivers and fuel, which is lit to cheer on when there is a major rally. During Japan's five-and-a-half-year strategic bombing of the capital, the "spiritual fortress" was finally destroyed, but it has long become a symbol of the War of Resistance. After Japan announced its unconditional surrender, hundreds of thousands of Chongqing citizens flocked to the former site of the "spiritual fortress" and the square of Jiaochangkou to spontaneously celebrate the end of the Anti-Japanese War, and the activities continued for nearly a month. In the same year, Zhang Dulun, then mayor of Chongqing, proposed and decided to build the "Anti-Japanese War Victory Monument" on the site of the original "spiritual fortress", that is, the predecessor of the Liberation Monument. The monument is 27.5 meters high, in the form of an octagonal column, composed of reinforced concrete on the helmet top, and the building life is more than 100 years. After the liberation of Chongqing, the "Monument to the Victory of the Anti-Japanese War" was planned and rebuilt by the Southwest Military and Political Commission, and the interior and exterior decorations took on a new look. Liu Bocheng, chairman of the Southwest Military and Political Commission, wrote an inscription to rename the "Monument to the Victory of the Anti-Japanese War" to the "People's Liberation Monument", referred to as the Liberation Monument. Since then, the Liberation Monument has become famous at home and abroad and has become a landmark in Chongqing.

Chongqing's classic after-break saying "The bell of the Liberation Monument - no swing" is due to the occasional suspension of the bell of the Liberation Monument in the 70s of the last century. The initial construction of the "Anti-Japanese War Victory Monument" is equipped with searchlights, weather vanes, azimuth meters and other equipment, but the lack of a large clock that can keep time, Zhang Dulun found the support of the Catholic Diocese of Chongqing, and the "Anti-Japanese War Victory Monument" also has four large bells that were shipped from Paris, France. Because the first generation is a mechanical clock, every day need to pull the thallium to the top of the stele to wind the clock, it is inevitable that there will be a large error. Until the early 80s of the last century, the timekeeping was more accurate, and the quartz clocks that did not need to be wound by man were replaced, and the first generation of mechanical clocks is still stored in the Catholic Joseph Church in Chongqing. In the new century, clocks were replaced by new products powered by power sources and controlled by computers. However, in 2005, the clock was still occasionally inaccurate. Two years later, the Swiss brand "Rolex" took the initiative to donate a set of clocks, and the Liberation Monument became the first attraction in Chongqing to use imported clocks in public places. On 5 February 2018, due to the expiration of the contract, the Rolex clock was replaced with a Swiss Tianjun clock, so visitors should not be surprised to find that the Liberation Monument clock is different from the old time. Every year on December 24 (Christmas Eve), December 31 (New Year's Eve), and midnight on Chinese New Year's Eve, tens of thousands of people gather here to wait for the bell to ring.

Before the 90s, the Liberation Monument was one of the tallest buildings in Chongqing. In the 90s, especially after Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government in 1997, the Jiefangbei area has developed rapidly, and the Jiefangbei has been submerged among the high-rise buildings. Today's Jiefangbei business district is centered on Jiefangbei, starting from Xiaoshizi in the east, bordering Jialing River Binjiang Road in the north, Jintang Street in the west, Heping Road and Xinhua Road in the south, and is known as "Cross Gold Street". The brands in the business district cover a variety of grades, from affordable domestic brands to exquisite and expensive foreign luxury brands. The Jiefangbei area has Chongqing Times Square, a high-end shopping landmark in Chongqing and even southwest China, Chongqing World Financial Center, one of the "four major financial centers in China", and Chongbai Building, which has a strong sense of life. In addition, Hongya Cave, a must-visit attraction in Chongqing, is also not far from the Liberation Monument, and a large number of authentic snacks in Chongqing have gathered in the Bayi Delicious Street and Jiaochangkou Night Market, bringing a large number of foreign tourists to the Jiefangbei business district every day.

In the fashionable and prosperous Jiefangbei pedestrian street, the Jiefangbei still exudes its unique historical charm. If you're new to Chongqing, the Liberation Monument is definitely the first place to check in.
