The term Banana Fish comes from a novel by Salinger, which later became the name of the country's first art bookstore specializing in independent publishing and publications.

Banana Fish Bookstore was founded in 2010 by Sophie and her husband Guan Wei, who was one of the first bloggers in China to focus on independent bookstores and independent publications. In 2009, they decided to start the Banana Fish Bookstore, which changed locations several times, and after experimenting with physical bookstores, online bookstores, studios, etc., they finally returned to Shanghai and opened a small physical bookstore in Putuo District.
