KAKADU - Merchant Reviews

KAKADU is the official recommended restaurant of the Australian Embassy in Shanghai, and is the only Australian restaurant in Shanghai where you can taste ostrich, crocodile and kangaroo meat. Opened in 2007, it has become one of the first choice restaurants for many Chinese diners because of its provision of rare Australian game.

KAKADU IS THE NAME OF A FAMOUS WILDLIFE AREA IN AUSTRALIA. This shows that the restaurant's main dishes are made from wild animals. It is worth mentioning that Australia is very rich in wildlife resources, among which wild animals such as crocodiles, ostriches and kangaroos are all legal ingredients. Because Australian kangaroos have no natural predators, they reproduce very quickly, and their numbers even exceed the number of Australian populations, so the local government gradually relaxed kangaroo killing. Since 1993, the Australian Government has approved kangaroo meat to be legally marketed and traded. Therefore, although kangaroos are Australia's national treasure, they can also be used as a delicacy on the table. In local Australian restaurants, it is not new to be able to eat kangaroo meat. Kangaroo meat has a lower fat content and is healthier than beef and mutton and other meats, but the taste is not as plump as beef and mutton, and its local sales are not as good as beef and mutton, and the price is relatively cheap.

The owner of the restaurant is an Australian with an Asian accent, and the hostess is a Chinese Australian, and the two are very kind and hospitable. The chef is hired locally in Australia. Since most of the diners who come to Kakadu are curious, several game dishes at the restaurant have become popular dishes with high orders. Kangaroo meat has a slightly similar texture to beef, but it is more chai than beef and has a foul flavor. The sour kangaroo meat is not to the taste of Chinese people, so chefs usually use salt, pepper and other condiments when cooking. The kangaroo meat in the restaurant has pan-fried kangaroo, Indian curry kangaroo meat, kangaroo meatballs, kangaroo meat burgers and other cooking forms, among which the kangaroo patty in the kangaroo meat burger is paired with goat cheese, and the salty cheese taste reduces the smell of kangaroo meat, which is more in line with the taste of Chinese people. A dish of raw ostrich meat in an appetizer can be difficult to eat at first glance. Whole ostrich meat is cut into thin strips and served with sesame leaves and shredded beet. However, after tasting it, I found that the taste of raw ostrich meat is unexpectedly delicate and tender, and the sesame leaves and beets just mask the fishy smell of ostrich meat, and the taste is even more fresh and strong with cheese, which is a dish that will bring surprises. The crocodile burger is one of the most popular game burgers. The crocodile patties in the burger are firm and salty, slightly chewy, and can be eaten with the flavor of fish, but also with a novel game taste. The freshly fried french fries that come with the burger are fragrant and generous, and you can enjoy a delicious and filling feeling when you eat them together.

Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Australia is famous for its seafood, including oysters from Sydney, mud crabs and Murrayton shell crayfish from Queensland, lobsters from South Australia and Western Australia, and aamundi (barramundi) from the Northern Territory. Diners who can't afford to enjoy the novelty of game can choose to try fresh seafood. The restaurant's oysters cost only 120 yuan a dozen, which is very affordable. Fresh oysters are flown in from Australia and are the most popular way to eat them raw, with a chilli sauce and the option of lemon juice. Australian oysters are small in size, but they also have a full, fresh and sweet taste. The oysters are relatively clean and have a slight seawater smell, so they are worth trying. Cheese baked seafood platter, served with common seafood such as oysters and mussel scallops, all relatively fresh and clean. In addition to seafood, conventional meats such as steak and roast chicken are also more acceptable to Chinese people.

In addition to the novelty of the cuisine, Kakadu is also a popular bar for foreigners, offering a wide range of alcoholic beverages such as specialty cocktails, whiskeys, brandies, and beers. Wine tastings are also held regularly in the restaurant to attract wine lovers from Shanghai. The restaurant is located in the No. 8 Bridge complex in the southeast of the former French Concession, and consists of three parts: a bar area, a leisure area and a terrace area. The bar area is a slightly dimly lit place to enter the entrance, and the dark brown tables and chairs are not dull in proportion to the large green plants that surround it, making it a good choice for relaxing with a drink. The long fish tank in the middle of the bar area and the lounge area is eye-catching and adds to the overall environment. The relaxation area has a transparent glass ceiling, which is transparent and private. The terrace area has a more casual and free atmosphere, and is the first choice for many foreign diners to dine at lunch. Most of the waiters in the restaurant are Southeast Asian people who communicate in English, can speak simple Chinese, and are warm and friendly without a sense of distance. The restaurant has a shortage of kitchen staff, and the serving speed is a little slow, which requires diners to wait patiently.
