Dulwich College Beijing (DCB) is the second international school in China to be opened by Dulwich College International, a leading private boys' school in the UK, founded in London in 1619. Dulwich College International currently has ten schools in seven cities across four countries in Asia, with the first Dulwich College International in Pudong, Shanghai, and the opening of Dulwich College Beijing in 2005. DCB is favored by many upper-class families, and celebrities such as Wang Zhonglei, Faye Wong, Tian Liang and Li Xiang have chosen to send their children to Dulwich College.
The school is divided into two campuses, one is the Regency Garden Campus and the other is the Heung Kong Garden Campus, where students under the age of 7 study at the Heung Kong Garden Campus and students aged 7-18 study at the Regency Garden Campus. The state-of-the-art facilities at the Regency Garden Campus include two air stadiums, multi-purpose sports clubs, six tennis courts, a two-star FIFA football pitch, a natural turf rugby pitch and the only cricket pitch in Beijing. The founding school, Dulwich College, is inextricably linked to drama, and its founder, Edward Alleyn, was a leading figure in the British theatre industry at the time, so artistic sentiment is an important part of Dulwich's "Whole Person Philosophy", and drama has become one of Dulwich's most important activities, for which DCB has built a 602-seat Wodehouse Theatre and a 300-seat Edward Alleyn Theatre, as well as two black box theatres.
Air quality is a challenge for all schools in Beijing, so DCB has upgraded the fresh air filtration system in all indoor areas, supplemented by a secondary filtration system, to ensure that 90% of the air pollution can be removed. School buses are part of the campus, and similarly, all DCB buses are equipped with air filtration devices. In addition, the DCB will monitor the air quality data of the day every day, and if it exceeds a certain standard, outdoor activities will be reduced or cancelled.
One of the major features of DCB is the college system, which is an important measure to enhance students' sense of belonging. DCB has five colleges, namely Allen College, Woodhouse College, Owens College, Soong Ching Ling College, and Johnson College. Friendly competitions are often held between the colleges, such as sports and music performances, competitions, and students communicate and collide with new sparks in the competition.
DCB basically follows the academic framework of British schools, and the English National Curriculum is studied before Year 10, which is basically the same as the curriculum of local schools in the UK, and students are required to study the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) curriculum from Year 10. IGCSE is the most popular two-year curriculum system abroad, similar to the junior high school curriculum, and is a part of the Cambridge Global Tests. Students begin the IBDP in Year 12 in preparation for university applications. Class sizes vary by grade, with a maximum of 21 students in Grades 1-2, 22 students in Grades 3-11 and 14 students in the IB Baccalaureate Programme in Grades 13-14. More than two-thirds of DCB's teachers are foreigners, most of whom are from English-speaking countries, and Chinese courses are taught by Chinese teachers, all of whom are qualified.
In 2017, a total of 68 DCB graduates took the IB Global Examinations with an average score of 37.63 points (for reference, the 2017 IB Global Average Score was 29.95 points), 4 students achieved 43 points, and 5 students achieved 44 points. The school has received more than 190 offers, with an average of 3 offers for each graduate, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Brown University, Yale University, University of California, Los Angeles, Amherst College, Wellesley College and other top universities in the United Kingdom and the United States.
If you want to enter DCB, nationality and capital are two thresholds. First of all, the student and one parent are required to hold a foreign passport, and Chinese students are not enrolled. The grades range from parent-child classes to grades 13 and students aged 1-18 are enrolled. In terms of fees, DCB belongs to a higher level, starting from the first grade, the tuition fee per academic year starts from 200,000 yuan and increases year by year, 214,000 yuan per year for grades 1-2, and 281,000 yuan per year for grades 12-13. In addition, students are required to take an entrance exam before enrolling in DCB, so that the school can find out the student's learning ability and provide assistance to non-native English speakers.
