Beijing Shunyi International School, abbreviated as ISB, is the oldest international school in Beijing, located at No. 10 Anhua Street, Shunyi District. In 1980, the U.S. Embassy, together with the British Embassy, the Australian Embassy, the Canadian Embassy and the New Zealand Embassy, officially established Beijing Shunyi International School. Before 2002, the ISB only accepted children of diplomats working in Beijing, but since January 2002, the ISB has begun to accept foreign students other than diplomatic children.
There are many international schools in Shunyi, and the hardware equipment conditions of ISB are ahead of others. The campus covers an area of 130,000 square meters, and all indoor areas use medical-grade air purification systems, and the indoor air quality index is close to zero. Out of the importance of students' physical health, ISB has built two spherical gymnasiums with six tennis courts, a variety of indoor and outdoor activity areas, fitness equipment, and advanced air purification systems. In addition, there are baseball fields, swimming pools, full-size football fields, gyms, and more. The ISB provides students with a visual arts center and multiple art labs, a 600-seat theater that can accommodate large-scale performances, and a black box theater for students to experiment with theater.
ISB's teaching grades range from PreK 3 to Grade 12, and the school runs from kindergarten to high school. ISB is fully accredited by CIS (Association of International Schools) and accredited by ACAMIS (Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools), NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges), NCCT (Ministry of Education Basic Education Curriculum and Textbook Development Center) and other relevant accrediting bodies.
Learning21@ISB is the ISB teaching framework, commonly known as L21, which encompasses ISB students from PreK 3 to Grade 12. Based on the L21 framework, ISB's English and Mathematics courses are based on the American Common Core standards, and in the health and physical education program, ISB is based on the Physical Education curriculum of Ontario, Canada. English is the language of instruction at ISB, but ISB also offers opportunities for students to learn foreign languages, Chinese for students in grades 3-12, French for students in grades 9-12, and Spanish for grades 9-12. Each student has a MacBook, and the students work on the project from the computer.
As early as 1991, ISB was recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization and was the first international school in China to obtain IB accreditation. The B curriculum is a global high school curriculum, which is currently the most challenging international curriculum system, and correspondingly, the IB program has the highest degree of diploma recognition, and international students can apply to universities around the world through IBDP results. ISB offers a full IBDP curriculum for students in Years 11 and 12, as well as individual IB courses. In addition to the IB curriculum, ISB offers some AP courses. ISB is a certified test center that is qualified to host international exams such as SAT, ACT, IB, AP, etc.
ISB's transcript is very satisfactory in Beijing, with more than 600 offers received from the Class of 2017 of 136 ISB graduates, of which 87% were from the United States, 6% from Canada, 2% from the United Kingdom, and 5% from universities in other countries and regions. Among the many offers, there is no shortage of Ivy League universities, including Harvard University, Brown University, Columbia University, Princeton University, and Dartmouth College. In addition to the Ivy League, ISB also holds offers from top liberal arts colleges such as Williams College and Wellesley College, and other top universities such as UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon University are also included in ISB. Such a report card, placed on a national scale, is also quite dazzling.
ISB tuition is roughly about 200,000 yuan a year, according to different school periods, the price is slightly different, PreK is 174,560 yuan/school year, 11th and 12th grade tuition is 245,300 yuan/year, in addition to tuition, parents also need to pay campus construction fees, school bus fees, lunch fees and other miscellaneous expenses every year.
ISB requires not only that the student has a foreign nationality, but also that one of the parents must have a foreign nationality or a foreign residence permit (Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are also acceptable), and at least one parent must work and live in Beijing. In general, ISB's courses are mainly in the United States, and most of the graduates go to American universities, so if the family conditions are met and the target university is an American university, ISB will be a very good choice.
