Black Diamond (BD) is an American climbing, ski equipment manufacturer, translated as black diamond in China, formerly known as Chouinard Equipment, founded by the founder Yvon Chouinard in the 70s, the main product in the early days was pitons, because of reliable quality, light and durable, Chouinard pitons were the standard equipment for climbing at that time.
 
Chouinard was declared bankrupt in 1989 due to product safety concerns, and was split in two. The apparel division was retained by founder Yvon Chouinard and renamed Patagonia, while the mountaineering equipment division was bought by some employees to reorganize it as Black Diamond Equipment.
 
In the process of expansion, Black Diamond acquired Bibler, Ascension, and was later acquired by Clarus Corporation.
 
Today, Black Diamond is the only brand in the field of snow cover production that can compete with Outdoor Research, BD snow covers are also well-made, but the number of products is far from OR, there are only 4 snow covers in total, corresponding to mountaineering, ice climbing, hiking and cross-country running.
