In 1971, Kryptonite was founded, and in the same year the first U-lock in history was manufactured. The following year, the company's founders took their products to New York City's Second Avenue and locked a three-speed bicycle to a road sign in Greenwich Village, a country known for its high rate of bicycle theft. A month later, all the parts of the bike that could be removed were stolen, leaving only the Kryptonite U-lock and the locked frame. Since then, Kryptonite and its U-locks have made a name for themselves. Twenty-two years later, organized by the New York Post, Kryptonite conducted a similar test by locking a $600 green Univinega road bike to the East Village toll booth in New York, known as Bermuda. Forty-eight hours later, the bike is still locked on the city's streets, where more than 100,000 bicycles are stolen every year.
