The LEGO Group is now the world's fourth-largest toy manufacturer. It is a family-owned company with more than 5,000 employees worldwide. Around 150 designers from 18 countries design different components for all LEGO collections. These series are sold in more than 130 countries.
But in the beginning, the company was just a small family business. It was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark. Christian makes wooden utensils, including escalators and toys. His company made wooden toys until a fire destroyed his warehouse of wooden toys in 1960. In 1934, he named the company "LEGO", an abbreviation of the Danish word "leg godt", which means "to play".
LEGO started making plastic toys in 1947 and was the first company in Denmark to use a plastic injection molding machine. By 1951, plastic toys accounted for half of the company's exports. The company continued to refine the design between 1949 and 1958, but the basic building blocks remained the same from 1958 onwards.
At present, LEGO bricks are popular all over the world, and occupy the market in more than 130 countries. It is estimated that more than 300 million children own Lego bricks. The average annual time spent playing Lego is half a billion hours, and despite the huge success of Lego in the market, they are not letting up. Today's world is the world of PC, and realistic toys can no longer satisfy children's fantasies and curiosity, and the virtual space in the computer can fully accommodate children's imagination.
