Sanlian Taofen Bookstore - Institutional Review

With a long history, Joint Bookstore has always been loved by readers, and at the same time, it is also a cultural brand with a unique style. Sanlian Bookstore was originally a well-known publishing unit, praised by Yang Jiang as the "spiritual home of intellectuals", and its predecessor was the Life Bookstore, Xinzhi Bookstore and Reading Publishing House founded by Zou Taofen, Xu Boxin and others in the thirties. At the time of the change of the old and new centuries, Sanlian Publishing House opened a new window to readers, and Taofen Bookstore was born.

Born in Beijing, Chengdu is the second city in China to have a triple Taofen. The bookstore is divided into three parts, facing the gate is "Sanlian Reading" and "Sanlian Activities", both sides are "Sanlian Life", and there is a glass corridor in the middle of the courtyard, and excerpts from the works of writers such as Qian Zhongshu and Yang Jiang are hung on both sides. The bookstore maintains its original appearance of blue bricks and gray tiles, with the doors, windows, and eaves painted blue, and several sets of tables and chairs placed in the courtyard, which is quite leisurely.

Unlike the Beijing head office, the Chengdu store is not rich in books, with only nearly 3,000 books. However, a small quantity does not mean a low quality, and Sanlian Taofen Bookstore attaches great importance to the classics of books in terms of book selection, and on the only two rows of large bookshelves in the bookstore, a group of Sanlian publications has a complete range of Sanlian publications; The other group is covered with fine books from other publishing houses, with Guangxi Normal University Press, CITIC Publishing House and Shanghai Translation Publishing House accounting for the majority. Among all the books, there are very few bestsellers, social science and philosophy books, and many unpopular books such as "History of the Peloponnesian War". Bookstores will update their lists from time to time, but they will not increase in number.

Bookstores are more keen to devote most of the space to readers, and the reading area and activity area occupy a lot of the bookstore's area. In addition to the ubiquitous reading spots, there is also a communication hall in the backyard of the bookstore, which is a dedicated place for academic forums, cultural lectures, book launches and other events. In leisure time, this independent space is also open to all readers. The fly in the ointment is that the bookstore implements the "one tea, one seat" system, so that consumption can be seated, and many readers report that the bookstore's drinks are more expensive and taste average. Sanlian Taofen Bookstore is also a 24-hour bookstore, but it is only open all day on Fridays and Saturdays.

"Sanlian Life" is a space that mainly sells and displays cultural and creative products. The cultural and creative product area is not connected to the reading area and is independent of the two sides to ensure that this area does not affect the reading experience of others. The bookstore's cultural and creative products include notebooks, tea sets, aromatherapy, etc., which are rich and diverse, in addition to most of them from Sanlian's original development, there are also some products that cooperate with brands such as HAY and Wuzao, and the price is not too expensive.

"From Sanlian" and "'Chongdri' designer", these two labels alone have made Sanlian Taofen Bookstore highly sought after since its opening, and its geographical location in the wide and narrow alley has made countless people visit every day. Bookstores try to create a quiet reading environment, frequently adding spacing and posting signs such as "no photography", but the hustle and bustle of the crowd still causes a certain amount of distress for real readers.
